I can understand the concerns but at the same time it feels weird to deny young people the ability to make their ideas reality. I got proper internet access when I was 12 and that is how I taught myself how to program.

If you give an average classroom of 12 year olds free access to AI, do you think the AVERAGE effect will be that the kids will use the AI to dive really deep into topics and learn programming, or that they will copy and paste the solutions to their homework, and use the freed up time to do other things than study?

I think you need to explain the solution you're thinking of in detail. "an RFC that gives parents the ability to communicate their underage child is using the device without revealing or verifying any further information." is no different to "turn on age lock?" that you see on website now. It requires the parent to be present, engaged and 1 step ahead of their kids, and if we could depend on that, then we wouldn't ev…

He was saying, vendors put that flag in the OS and parents set that flag in the OS and internet services respect that flag from the OS. No website anything, all in the OS. No staying ahead of anything, one and done. This, as noted above, requires that services respect the flag, which they do not universally do today. That requires legislation, something that will be a part of any workable solution.

Sorry, I think you're being short sighted here.

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time rebuilding custom kernels and installing Puppy, DSL and other niche small operating systems on whatever random bits of hardware I could come across. I assume a lot of other HN users did the same. My parents would have had no opportunity to set the flag, meaning everywhere would have to assume default locked/blocked.

> This, as noted above, requires that services respect the flag, which they do not universally do today. That requires legislation, something that will be a part of any workable solution.

This is advocating for a variety of closed internet that is legally locked by default and would require a level of legal and international cooperation that would never happen. I'd argue that the resulting network isn't the Web any more.

Claude Executive: Damn, we hardly know who our users are, can't we just force them to say their full name or ban them? Claude Product Manager: No, that'll piss people off too much, and sadly we can't just ask for ID either... Claude Executive: There must be some way we can force people to link their government IDs with our platform so our analytics get better and more accurate? Claude Product Manager: We could limit…

Literally every single HN thread these days mentioning big companies the top comment is some cynical conspiratorial nonsense. Say Big Tech is out to get you in any way possible no matter how outlandish and people eat it up. Nothing can just happen for good or neutral reasons it's always tied to some master plan.

Humans DO conspire.

Interest groups and politicians DO conspire.

Governments DO conspire.

Big corporations DO conspire.

When you have the mix of everything above, they definitely conspire.

“Theory” part is only about finding out WHAT the actual conspiracy is. That can be reasonable, or outlandish, facts based or fantasy.

And children will still have access to the internet and resources to teach themselves how to program.

There are also people arguing that children should have no internet access because its harmful.

But children do have access to internet and often with some protections.

This is also how I feel about AI, where a full ban is the lazy way out. Similarly like the internet, it is not possible to 100% protect a child every potential harmful AI interaction.

I once heard someone suggest that this should be on the OS level and I'm slowly coming around to the idea. There should be some kind of OS level flag that can easily broadcast to products that a child is using the device. No ID verification required, the parent is responsible for setting it, and all downstream applications are regulated to respect it, If applicable to the product. This removes the incredibly invasive…

On macOS beta you can define your age and apps can ask for it.

However is just a number you put, I can have 200 years old :-)

Right, those are fairy tales of course https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_linked_to_chatbots

Hundreds of deaths are linked to bathtubs every year, too. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9418042/

bathing generally reduces mortality though, not sure chatbots do

It's not just Claude. It's being cut off from every part of society except a carefully curated "child ghetto". In which you stay until the day you turn 18. At which point you're shoved out into the outside world. Possibly cut off from all your existing contacts, in fact, since now you're an "adult" and it's presumed dangerous for you to interact with a "child" in any noninstitutional way. Yes, most of society is onli…

> Yes, most of society is online nowadays, or at least is hard to engage in if you can't access the online stuff that organizes it. I think there's an analogy to physical roads there. Most of society is connecting by roads and adults driving cars, but that doesn't prevent children from participating in the things between the driving.

Lack of access to take a bus or permission to walk anywhere is another form of the same disease.

PG-13 didn't exist in 1981. It went straight from PG to R. So less loosening of restrictions, and more adding gradation.

And in 1981 PG movies had tits.

It's bizarre because tits are the first thing everybody sees
