Hi Kenton!

One thing I'm wondering about (and was happy to see) is how you seem to have your (childhood) friends close by, at least on occasion.

I live in Europe and am considering what a move somewhere else in Europe (+/- 1000km) would mean. Seeing much less of my long-time friends, I imagine. But Austin seems much further from the earlier places you've stated you've lived. Did some of your friends just move with you? Are they visiting often?

By contrast, I think that every post on HN doesn't need a bucket full of crabs complaining that they can't do the same thing. It's not intellectually stimulating.

You don't think questions of how we design our societies, who gets to benefit from it, how power is distributed, of systems design and how we relate to each other socially are intellectually stimulating?

May I suggest the problem is not with the questions then?

I'm putting external shutters on my house in London this winter. This summer was crazy. I've never seen them further north than Barcelona.

We stayed in a hotel in Reims, France which had them. Controlled by a remote, and when they were down they completely blacked out the room too. Awesome.

I don't want to indict anyone. I am not a judge or prosecutor. I am saying that my own moral shortcomings do not justify his.

There is this kinda old book that has some stories in it. I never got to read the whole thing back-to-back, but the Cliff's Notes of it is pretty much that we all are imperfect beings, that we are not able to fix everything on our own and that the best we can do is to recognize and forgive the mistakes we all made.

I don't need to know anything about a person working for Facebook to know that the product of their labor is bad for society. Saying "this thing you are doing is evil" is NOT the same as saying "you are an evil person". People will end up creating all sorts of rationalizations for their actions, especially when their identities are attached to it. If we don't call out on evil, then it becomes accepted.

It's time for HN to build in blocking capability. It's a small percentage of people and it's often the same people repeatedly showing up making the same points but that's enough to discourage reading and participation.

You can already filter noise out pretty easily when you begin picking up on shared mannerisms. I suggest an extension configured with a mix of keywords and regexes, blocking of very recently created accounts and ones with a high percentage of numbers in their username.

I don't think the 75k number is what's shocking. It's a house that costs 7 figures. That is not remotely attainable for most people in this country.

It's not surprising given the author's background. What I don't get is the part right before about not being able to afford a family-sized house in Palo Alto. Guessing the answer is yeah, they could afford it, but they don't want to pay that much for something still not very large.
