As long as the service provider runs an instance in their infrastructure and allows everybody to read. That said, RSS seems way simpler.
I don't disagree and I'm not a mastodon user but, as far as I know, if you local gov hosted an instance and your state gov did too, you could, essentially, join both and see them together? RSS aggregation seems like the solution to me but I think we've got to admit defeat on that one because it's been around forever and people don't use it.
Yes, you can subscribe from whatever instance you want.
(I'm not a mastodon user either. But I've read the docs.)

Google and Facebook fucked up the internet. The internet we had in the 90's and early 00's was amazing. Everything felt free, indie, hackable, composable, ingestible. You didn't worry about platforms because most platforms exposed their data via friendly APIs (remember when Reddit and Twitter had an API and that they encouraged people to actually use them?) RSS everywhere, websites with honest to god Bittorrent links…

#395Somebody needs to figure out how to move millions of people from one platform to other. Otherwise we will never get better platforms and our current techlords will keep getting richer.
Problems that need to be solved - 1. Distribution - corps own the browsers 2. Platforms - corps own these as well 3. Cost - hosting, moderation, etc. You may very well be building a whole new intraweb

It almost seems like we need laws that information about public services have to be available on a public website (as opposed to a third-party website that requires registration). I personally do not know anyone in real life with a twitter account (although I have one, I have not used it in over 15 years), I wonder how many people just go without this information and are angry that it's (seemingly) not available.

Won't happen in the EU because they are incapable of getting anything done. So unless you're in a jurisdiction other than the above three I wouldn't hold your breath about any laws being passed about this.
I don't think it's even about being in anyones pocket. They want the publicity. And unless they are all forced to stop using it, everyone has to use it.

#398Few details but glad to see the project will continue. Given how much crucial information is posted exclusively to X, having an alternative frontend is important. Interesting that they were inspired by Invidious (alternative YouTube frontend). That’s another project that could use some love. Hopefully AI coding tools can do some good and make it easier for these projects to find ways into the walled gardens and work…

there is a couple good arguments that alternative front ends open up competition. the first is that since people only see the front end, then augmenting that with additional backends is lower friction. the other is that since network effects are so important (people only go to the busy clubs), that providing a bridge to the existing users and content is kind of mandatory for someone trying to promote an alternative.

If someboy posts something on X...I just assume its a performative act, you dont want to reach an audience and I just ignore. Never creating an account to hear an opinion ....
