How would one hold Google accountable? By fining them $1bn? $10bn? $100bn? To them it is just the cost of doing business. We're beyond holding huge companies accountable. The only way they could be held accountable is if there was personal risk involved for the CEOs. There isn't.
At this point, breaking them up into smaller companies. Then start fining the individual companies so the balance sheets feel the fine more. Increase the fines exponentially for each violation.

#53215 years ago: "why is google putting so much effort into building a web browser? it must be because they want to see the web grow and by extension more people will use their services"
That was always the obvious answer.

#533This entire thread is so ridiculous. UBlock Origin Lite still blocks all the ads.

#534Ad blocking has become a safety issue. My parents are at an age where they fall for things. If a malicious ad pops up and offers to install McAfee, some other form of crapware, or outright scamware, they'll click that ad and install the thing. Then I'll get called over when the computer starts acting screwy. If Google, MS, etc. had ever gotten together and developed a way to filter malicious ads out of their own ad s…

Alphabet needs to be broken up. Chrome, Search, Android, Youtube need to be separate companies. It's not the only company that needs this treatment.
I'm quite torn on this. The United States needs a strong economy to counter China and keep Europe safe. In the short term, this might be nice, but in the medium term these moves might cause significant disruption to what makes the United States the highest gdp in the world. I'm unsure what the polymarket on this post is will be flagged. It's kind of surprising for HN to be so educated but not know (academic) internat…
So what Europe need is strong economy to counter US and keep us safe from them, the most dangerous country for world peace together with Israel.
Sadly for EU they will keep shooting themselves in one leg with RU sanctions and shooting themselves to other leg with Green Deal nonsense, so you don't really need strong economy to be better than EU, just a bit of common sense.

#536Personally I am fine with having desktop (Vivaldi) and phone (Firefox) completely separated without sync (not using Google account in any of them, using only dummy account in Android TV for Smarttube and play store (I'd like to thank Google for disabling X-plore file manager, which is not possible to reenable, but anyway I switched to Cx file explorer which lets me to connect over FTP, which is all I need to manage ATV)), it's just not that easy to sync passwords, bookmarks and other settings when switching to other phone once in a few years.

You mean OS as in "operating system", not "open source", which made me question how you'd suggest Safari and Edge before I realized what was going on. I don't know why using the default browser a OS comes with or not would be better? Who cares? All that matters for me is what features it has and that performance isn't horrible, and if I cannot have vertical tree-style tabs in it and hide the tab-bar, then I personall…
> I don't know why using the default browser a OS comes with or not would be better? Are being ignorant on purpose now? Apple's Safari has integration with Apple's Password app which firefox does not. Edge automatically connects with your Microsoft account. Both browsers sync tabs, bookmarks and so on across your Microsoft/Apple account connected devices. For a lot of 'average' users this is already extremely conveni…
I'm already using Firefox, you don't need to sell me on using it!
> On top of that, Safari is still the most 'energy efficient' browser you could use on macOS.
Ok cool, but I think some other people might be using some other OS than macOS, but don't quote me on that. Not sure why "Always use the default browser your OS developer has packaged for you" applies just because Safari happens to work well (only?) on macOS.

It's not just elderly parents. I've sat in on many an incident where skilled people in accounts or HR similarly saw and ad and thought "I have to do this thing", leading to compromise.
