It's Twitter. It legally owns the trademark "Twitter", the bird logo and the color blue. Musk really screwed up that one huh? Under UDRP rules it'll be pretty hard for them to seize their rightful domain name twitter.com, but maybe they'll manage.
Their USPTO is still pending, so we'll see. But yes legally they have good grounds to continue DBA as Twitter.

RCS is an international standard. Google only adds their client (and running the service if your mobile provider doesn't).
Don't know what EU apps are you talking about, but yes, mobile apps need Google services. Web interfaces don't.

That's why we really need some kind of non profit or maybe two "social media" sites made with the public good in mind. One could be officially government sanctioned and funded (sort of like Voice of America but internal to the US more so) and have a strict organisation verification policy for local police / government and other quasi public entities (say like transportation systems and energy companies - etc)

We're just reinventing moderated Usenet newsgroups.

#409Honest question: Why don't we have a UN-operated global social media that is used by all officials worldwide, instead of them using privately owned social media?
The EU has their own Mastodon instance, but unless you want to have responses (even if the official instance doesn't show them), it's cheaper to run a static news aggregator.
It would be nice, but it seems most people don't care about this.

Sure. Totally agree, but it's confusing. For example, Wordpress still has Twitter-block. And when I try to explain new authors that they should use Twitter-block for X.com integration, they think that I'm stupid. But not me, right?
