... a Reddit comment? I guess I assumed you meant "people who should have a pretty good idea said it was impossible" since that could be interesting, and not "a random person on the Internet said X", since that's not interesting for any value of X.

It's not particularly hard to find other ones. Add one more and it's people.

Oh sure, I bet you can find plenty of random people on the Internet who said it's impossible.

You can also find plenty of people on the Internet who say that humanoid reptiles live in the earth's core.

Is either one interesting when/if they're wrong?

Calling reusability "a dream" is different from saying "Starlink is impossible." You can try to read the tea leaves on tone and some creative interpretation of implicature (despite Starlink actually needing fewer than 1000 satellites for its public launch), but they're different claims. Not sure why there's a need to exaggerate the victimhood of SpaceX lol, super strange. The Ariane guy was quite clear about what he…

Without reusability, SpaceX wouldn't achieve profitability in its connectivity segment. Especially not by 2024

Maybe so, but that wasn't the claim the Ariane guy was making at all.

From the first entry in Cambridge Dictionary (though there may certainly be more than one valid definition to consider, this is the one I have been using): > (a) serious discussion of a subject in which many people take part The debate I'm referring to is here, the discussion between commenters on HN about which name should be used (I'm well on the side of Gulf of Mexico as well). One does not need to see multi-sided…

There is no serious discussion on this point. There was never intended to be. There is only the bullying, and now the tone policing. But we all have better things to do with our time.

I've been serious so far and I hold an open invite anyone to join in as they'd like - the more the merrier :).

I wholeheartedly stand behind pushing back on & rejecting these kinds of decisions and policies. Please don't mistake "not wanting the comments here to jump straight to name calling" as "wanting people who disagree with Trump to instead say nothing here".

Trump is the one who normalised name calling. You elected a bully to be your leader. A bully who calls women “piggy”, and everyone lets him get away with it.

I voted for Jill Stein, that Trump won even though he says vile things should not be an excuse for us to normalize it even further. There are a lot of reasons he gets away with things which need to be dealt with, people getting riled up by him enough to act the same way instead is precisely what he wants.

Debate used to be the staunchest form of resistance. This last decade, racing to call the opposition a crybaby and declare it activism seems to be more in vogue.

> racing to call the opposition a crybaby Nobody is calling "the opposition" a crybaby, but a specific crybaby person.

I assumed it apparent Trump and his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico was what the original comment opposed. Perhaps an error on my part as not everyone sees that view the opposition here, but certainly for the one I was replying to at least.

That link is from 2022 presumably about the twitter purchase. People like the guy in the link thought Twitter would go offline hard after firing almost all of the company, instead Elon was right and there was so much fat to cut.

Yeah, twitter is doing great. /s

Since he bought it MAU are up 150 million people, and it seems to be more profitable (although that's not as clear in their most recent filings). Company valuation is down, but I think it's generally agreed he overpaid with the 44 billion takeover, current company market price is slightly above what it was before he publicized his intention to buy it.

It's doing a lot better since he bought it as far as I can tell.

Back then tesla was a unicorn.

ah yes the "wifi" satellites

yeah yeah you're being reductive because you want to dismiss it, but that's essentially what they are... it's not like the dude is solving world hunger (which he is uniquely resourced to actually do), he wants to be space AT&T and is capitalizing on the degradation of public infrastructure using the funding that should be building it

It's a bit naive if you think lack of money is the cause of "world hunger". There is plenty of money, and governments have far more than he does. On the other hand, connecting previously unconnected (and some unconnectable) regions is a huge boon to their population. Starlink is great.

How would you describe the achievement? Personally I describe nuclear weapons as incredible (though also horrific).

Remarkable, perhaps? I'd hesitate to use "incredible" because his background privilege and wealth makes it all... well, more credible; and using such an unalloyed, positive word feels wrong given the costs to his relationships and his promotions of far-right groups and conspiracy theories. His path is unique, but it's believable and nuanced. That's beside the point though, which is that you can't say something being…

So I should have said “remarkable”?

Sure, I can do that.
