#862A real shame. Even if you put all the political arguments aside it sucks when a site requires you to log in before you can read content on it. For me that’ll mean I just don’t read content on there any more. Which I realise X doesn’t care about, I’m not monetisable anyway. But a shame nonetheless.
Both Imgur and Reddit have put a lot of roadblocks up lately as well. I think some of it is driven by trying to reduce bot traffic. It's quite inconsistent though which is really frustrating. I can look at the imgur homepage feed, but if I go into a specific post and accidentally click anywhere it throws a modal up that can't be dismissed. If I go on a specific subreddit or post I can freely look, but reddit homepage…
Actually you can discard those annoying popups on reddit using some HTML element blocker (e.g. “hide distracting element” on safari or the picker tool from uBlock origin)
I had some success with these for logged-out browsing ever since old.reddit was locked down completely

I do not use this garbage product made only to make your day miserable because it's ragebaiting algorithm. It's not essentiall by any means, it's only designed so you feel that way.
Mine rarely shows rage bait and when it does I just block everyone involved or add words to mute list. I think people who see this a lot are in fact baited and it creates a cycle. Which isn't to say it's a good system, more that it's easily avoided
I understand it's me but I always pause when I see some ridiculous russian propaganda or idiotic politic commentaries. Weird thing is, that I always everytime click on I'm not interested but it rarely works. Instead of stopping showing me any propaganda or politics at all it usually just switches to the opposite pole of same theme. I would gladly be using it if it be basically be hn with pictures.

Personally I have zero interest. If it's a big enough deal, it'll get to me somehow. Knowing about it 15s after it happened and then seeing a flood of uninformed speculation would be stressful. Others do value that, no judgment, but for me it's be a net negative.
Literally the next thing that happened after I posted this yesterday: my kid texted me that Dolly Parton had died. That’s how some news gets to me—- it’s important to someone I know. It turns out that that is both a good filter and fast enough propagation.

Reddit is the worst for this. I hate the disgusting, low class UX design where they let you read about 10-15 seconds of a page before locking you out. Though I think Pinterest takes the cake for being just the ugliest example of this.
Old Reddit is now completely unusable without an account. Maybe it's time for me to finally stop using it.

Maybe this power posturing would have worked 20 years ago, before America's enshittification showed who its "contributions" were ultimately designed to benefit. I don't disagree that it's urgent for middle powers to contribute to the world. I believe ending their protection of America's value-extracting power is now a great way to do exactly that.

That's not quite what I meant sorry, I meant Reddit handles it differently to Imgur (one blocks the homepage and one blocks deeper links but not thr homepage. I agree with what you're saying though
