Whatever happened to "Twitter can do what it wants, it's a private platform"?
Have you heard of the Goomba fallacy?

I believe that sentiment started to die out around the time people realized a Nazi gained control over the world's centralized communication hub. Whether that says more about the communication, the nazi, or the people is a question for the ages.
Colour me shocked.

I don't understand, is people still using it? Once Elonified and walled, was already a clear bye bye years ago. why there would be still the need to have an account and post stuff there? boycott is the answer. loosing and having few users is the biggest pain, let them drain into the void.
I use Nitter/Xcancel entirely because I don't have an account, and Twitter is now unusable without one. There's still content of some value there. People still link to it and now I can't read what they shared with me.

Both Imgur and Reddit have put a lot of roadblocks up lately as well. I think some of it is driven by trying to reduce bot traffic. It's quite inconsistent though which is really frustrating. I can look at the imgur homepage feed, but if I go into a specific post and accidentally click anywhere it throws a modal up that can't be dismissed. If I go on a specific subreddit or post I can freely look, but reddit homepage…
Bots are the noisy excuse they can scream and point to. You look at the mobile reddit app or the new reddit interface and you think these javascript “devs” are capable of forming any valid opinion on these things? This is the company that refers to its users as “daily active shitheads.” That’s a real quote. They’re just screaming and pointing to anything they can so they can lock it down and gain more favorable data…
If you truly believe this, then you should probably seek therapy.

> I don’t get why ai labs and staff didn’t move to Bluesky or something more open. Why would they, specifically? There's nothing particularly open about them.
The labs might not be open. But they would want access to data. More open platforms (the web at large, but bluesky in particular has made open access an explicit goal) tend to provide that, relative to x/threads/facebook/reddit/youtube. Some labs will be able to buy access. Not every platform will offer it. There are many more labs than the big ones.

I can look at the imgur homepage feed, but if I go into a specific post and accidentally click anywhere it throws a modal up that can't be dismissed. That's not inconsistent, that's a deliberate dark pattern that every social media site uses. Let them see the first page, then when they want to engage: force creating an account. When you just put a "log in…
> every social media site uses It's not only social media anymore, many mainstream websites have started doing it. For example on IMDB, you used to be able to read the comments, now they locked them behind a signup box.. it's only a matter of time until they lock the whole site down. I wish we had the old internet, with simple html forms, texts and pictures. The peek was really Web 2.0 design, it introduced just enou…

#858Middle powers should heed Cory Doctorow's advice [0] and start offering legal protection in their jurisdictions for precisely this type of projects. America is a hostile nation, who has sought to align everyone with its interests, under a false pretense of mutual benefit, while instead its tech sector has caused much harm at a global scale. America is now doubling down on value extraction, at an obvious expense to ev…

Like what exactly? Whatever harm US (software) tech has dished out, it has also dished out domestically. What is your nationality and what are your nation's contributions to the rest of the world?
