Both Imgur and Reddit have put a lot of roadblocks up lately as well. I think some of it is driven by trying to reduce bot traffic. It's quite inconsistent though which is really frustrating. It's not only social media anymore, many mainstream websites have started doing it.
For example on IMDB, you used to be able to read the comments, now they locked them behind a signup box.. it's only a matter of time until they lock the whole site down.
I wish we had the old internet, with simple html forms, texts and pictures.
The peek was really Web 2.0 design, it introduced just enough styles and interactivity to get rid of TABLES but no more than that.

It’s still fairly popular, but the statistics show that X usage is gradually declining. Elon claims that X is more popular than ever, but the platform doesn’t publicly release its own stats, and publicly available stats say otherwise. What public stats say otherwise?
Similarweb shows a consistent ~15% YoY decline. It also shows growth beginning in early Summer, so this trend may be changing as of very recently.
Sensor Tower shows a consistent ~10% YoY decline.
DataReportal/Kepios shows a ~5.3% decline in ad reach.
EU DSA Transparency repoorts shows ~10% decline
Pew Research shows a >20% decline in the US.
Regardless, I still use X and find a lot of value from the people I follow. I'm paradoxically optimist.

#845Twitter has gone from relatively open to instagram / facebook level of closedness where I can't even share a video with my friends because it asks them to log in. I had to rely on nitter and xcancel for that... Now that no longer works either I have one niche that I use twitter for. If it wasn't for that - would have deleted my account long time ago. Things like this push me towards that direction, though.
I actually paid for their dumb monthly subscription only so that I could download videos within the app to share with my friends who don't use X. Only after paying did I realize that by "download videos" it means "cache videos locally inside the app for offline playback". It still would not allow me to save the video to my local device. Misleading, tacky, possibly even desparate.
As both Nitter and Xcancel are down and I don't know of any alternatives, I use yt-dlp to download the videos now.

All of these are seriously bad copycat alternatives of twitter. And since twitter's foundations are laid on moving bedrock.... the whole thing is a horrible abomination where the tendrils are these "alternatives".
I'll take the bait, what makes Bluesky a bad copycat? It's just old Twitter. I can't for the life of me see what makes it "seriously bad", it has a pretty large userbase, it's seemingly got a decent number of normies to move over from X, it's pleasant enough to use. It's been a success. Saying this as one of twelve Mastodon users.
There is no bait. I just pointed out that instead of creating something new and unique, they copy something and add nothing......

#847I don’t get why ai labs and staff didn’t move to Bluesky or something more open. Grok searching across x/twitter is too valuable to ignore or silo. X is effectively a high signal comment layer for the entire internet + quasi internet (arxiv) + real world. Same applies to any data silo I suppose, X just seems more straightforward to beachhead.

The labs might not be open. But they would want access to data. More open platforms (the web at large, but bluesky in particular has made open access an explicit goal) tend to provide that, relative to x/threads/facebook/reddit/youtube.
Some labs will be able to buy access. Not every platform will offer it. There are many more labs than the big ones.

#848Annoying, after disruptions last few years, ended up using extension that manually scrolls through timeline to build a daily digest of tweets, which is all I really need. Keep time spend on bird site to a minimum.
