And by “licenses” you mean they were a founding company of the ARM consortium way back in the 1990s.

No, I mean licenses to use the ISA. The act of paying for the license has nothing to with Apple being or not being one of the founders.

Yes and no. Having more competition in the space is excellent news. However I am sad that the world interdependence is eroding as most other countries seem to sit on their hands and happily outsource every bit of manufacturing to a single country.

I've had my thinking in this area shift, too; I now believe China (and a few other places, like Vietnam) have "won" at manufacturing because their combination of government, cultural values, and the masses of their people from which they draw workers, managers, and owners simply are better at manufacturing than my own country is.

Part of what led me to believe this was waking up and realising they're also simply better at offering LLM inference: cheaper; faster; more innovative.

It's a horse of a very different colour from outsourcing where someone is simply chasing the lowest bidder.

China's internal economy is sluggish and has always underperformed. They rode the wave of industrialization, but production started moving away to cheaper locales years ago. Their rising standard of living hasn't come with the increased demand that makes the US consumer market so powerful. Technological advances and demand for cheap labor will pull up all the underdeveloped countries the same way as China.

China cannot produce high technology without inputs from all over the world. NOBODY can! That's what I mean when I say that nationalism and tech are incompatible. Free trade and transparent borders make technological progress faster, arbitrary restrictions and impediments to trade impede it. The knowledge that underlies the technological advances must be spread in order to produce future technologies, so it will be spread. There is no way to hold back the process of technological advance without destroying humanity itself, and so there's no way to keep technology locked in one nation, no way to maintain an eternal advantage.

Yeah, it is a really weird one. Especially iOS is optimized to the gills, there is no real desktop running to speak of and app developers care just a little more than on Android, yet somehow an iPhone can't keep a few apps in memory, yet a MacBook Neo with 8GB RAM does just fine with multiple chunky desktop (often Electron) applications in memory, along with macOS itself being more chunky.

So true and SO annoying. I have been away from Android for a while, is it any better there?

Less optimized, but for the same or less money you get 4-12GB more. Apple can't optimize away that gap.

Androids launched ≥2026 got a serious haircut in either memory or other features though. We'll see in 2028.

One of the (many) areas in which China is doing great is industrial robotics. Not the fancy dancing dogs, but robots that replace workers in factories.

I didn't watch the entire video, but 90% of the tasks I've seen in that video are easy to automate. The hardest ones are the cable pulling, putting the coil on the insert and soldering directly on the conveyor belt.

Including those two items I emphasised? This is usually where Apple's competition fail, mostly because they don't even consider it.

The age old problem of mobile chips have brilliant performance for about 15 seconds until they thermal throttle. If you are just using apps, 15 seconds is more than enough to launch and setup an app, for anything more it will be down graded a little. Still dang impressive but the form factor becomes the limiting factor.

The browser can sometimes idle a lot until there is a touch/scroll event so it can be good for responsiveness during that kind of bursty stuff too.
