The mandatory labeling is actually a big issue in Europe as well, it means German products can’t be sold in the Netherlands if they don’t have Dutch labeling and vice versa. Which creates a fragmented market.

Better than the alternative, with unreadable labels.

The solution is that many goods have labels in many languages in tiny text. Almost unreadable for me!

Everything the current US administration has done has been an unmitigated disaster. Tariffs are taxes. Manufacturing is still declining, not returning and a man who could not run casinos successfully is not going to change that. His economic and foreign policy are dictated entirely based on who flatters him the most. Add to that continued environmental damage, domestic policy dictated by a regressive religious minori…

Not absolutely everything. You can make a very strong negative claim without hyperbole, and be a more trusted source in the process.

Genuinely interested in understanding why you need this level of precision. To me it would seem you are removing some abstraction and getting to the details. If this something common in your line of work? E.g. in your peers? If that's the case, would you mind sharing the field you're active in? Do you have a hunch why you would need this level of detail e.g. Education, culture?

Canada is the kind of ally that sends a chinese spy to NATO headquarters. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwymk20n0v7o

If we want to be ridiculous, should we talk about Trump sharing intelligence with Russians, causing American allies to limit intelligence sharing?

Can you cite what intelligence was shared?

This was totally the right move, if for no other reason than it's the only thing that this US admin will respect in the long run. Being in Canada though this does look v. short sighted of the US. All this is going to achieve is pushing Canada much closer to other countries, particularly China, which at least superficially these negotiations were meant to prevent.

> that this US admin will respect in the long run.

Thankfully this US admin has ensured it won't have a long run.

The Port of Vancouver just did 24.4 million metric tonnes and that’s just going to rise. Thanks for your (fake) concern but we’ll be fine.

Which is just over 10% of Canada's oil exports. How does that invalidate my point? Also, I explicitly said "energy". That includes electricity (you can't export that anywhere else really) and natural gas (almost all of which is used domestically or exported to the US).

This will catalyze efforts to build more east-west energy infrastructure here in Canada, both oil and electricity. The last time the US made a serious run at Canadian sovereignty we built the Canadian Pacific rail to connect the country end to end. The same thing will happen this time, with pipelines and HVDC grid connections.

Short term the US needs the energy we sell as they don’t have sources to replace it with. Long term the pieces are already moving into place for more O&G exports via the pacific and selling electricity to ourselves with stronger grid connections.

Our reliance on US trade will diminish slowly, then all at once.

> and protect / stimulate domestic alternatives. I really would love to see this, but the sad truth is that there are no real alternatives for a very big amount of software products. In the end, the eu residents will simply have to pay more for a lot of software products, and that's it :(

That's the initial impact, it's exactly the incentive that over time will create native competitors. Yeah, there will be immediate pain but if EU competitors can spring up because the American software giants are disadvantaged it'll slowly erode the reliance on US's software.

I think that consumers will try to avoid the pain, and use vpns and fake addresses to get around the tariffs etc. The whole problem is that the EU is not providing an environment where software vendors can go as fast as the vendors in the US. This is not just a matter of regulations. It's the whole mindset that is too conservative to go fast. The whole 'throw 1000 things at the wall and see what sticks' is not something we europeans are used to.

Everyone talking about trade but this is about sovereignty. America wants to take over Canada.

All countries on this planet at some point were faced with a similar choice: capitulate or fight to the death. Ironically those who chose the latter are the ones who survived.

For Canadians, the alternative is the death of a language.

Can the US even afford a trade war, they are beginning to find borrowing more money increasingly difficult… currently the debt is around $130k for every man, woman and child in the US.

> currently the debt is around $130k for every man, woman and child in the US.

Or more precisely, for every man, woman and child in Venezuela.

USA only plan to get rid of this self-inflicted mess, seem to steal as much resources from other countries North and South as they can grab. Trump is not even trying to hide it.
