The more surprising thing with YouTube is how much obvious copyright infringement is in ads. The whole platform seems oriented around copyright enforcement, but ads seem to get a pass.

What copyright infringement did you see in an ad?

Anime characters they clearly haven't paid for the rights to use seem popular (anime studios typically announce their partnerships).

Also not a copyright violation, but using Elon Musk's likeness without permission for investment scams seems to be a big thing.

That's the thing. I rarely watch, just listening to music doodling in a background tab.

I think I remember some sponsored crap in 'der8auer' or something like 'linus tech tips' eons ago, but I don't watch them anymore.

So I can't really tell, but for my use case it seems redundant.

I also remember having imported uBo-lists from somewhere, allegedly enabling sponsor-blocking somehow. But that was another install. I don't have these anymore, ATM.

I just don't get their algorithm. I used to show YT videos to my students but I stopped that totally because of this kind of crap.

Use the unhook extension, ublock origin extension and firefox. Also don't hesitate to use the "Block element" feature for ublock. Get some control back from big tech :)

Rather, this is institutional crime. Organised crime is when crime operates its own control structures in defiance of government enforcement; this is the government actively allowing the crime to proliferate.

Organised crime involves the corruption of institutions too - specifically to allow getting away with it.

But I like your take on it as institutionalised crime because it is now publicly overt.

Yes, but we're speaking in English. If the definition of a same-sounding word changes in another language, it doesn't invalidate a point made within a language. It's fundamentally incorrect to say a standard billion is ever, in any modern context, 10^12, because we are speaking in English in 2026, and even the British mean 10^9 for the standard definition of a billion.

Sponsorblock can also skip non-music intros to music videos.

Yes but, the US is also kind of special. There are absolute no rules for people like Elon and Donald. The can break all laws, all day long in front of everybody and nothing does happen. They just get richer and richer. The small guy goes in jail for something like just walk over the street on the wrong place.
