Yeah, this whole area of UX scares me. Silent speech techniques could strike a balance, but it seems obvious it wont stop there - consider what a state actor would do if they could skip interrogation altogether? Unfortunately I think this is inevitable because as a species we perform a steady march toward collective desires for items of science fiction, so start your adversarial double-think practice now.

Is it really collective desire or are these products being pushed upon us? And why does it always have to be the dystopic "destroying human nature and society as we know it" science fiction and not the utopic "everyone lived happily ever after" science fiction? Or does it just feel that way to me?

Desire is probably the wrong word, fixation is more accurate. Like the skiing advice that you shouldn't look at things (trees) that you want to avoid.

As for Utopias/Dystopias, I don't know how to answer that without waxing poetic about ideas like chaos being the natural order, or beauty being in the eye of the beholder, .

Their data collection is naturally based off of people talking or typing: https://condu.it/thought/10k-hours So you'd need to force people to somehow think the same things they do when talking or typing, without actually performing those actions. If you can do that, why not just have them talk?

Isn't that just for data collection though? I imagine the fully trained model they're expecting to have will be able to map thoughts -> text. The data collection will naturally need to have the 2 sets in order to do self-supervised training.

Remember that a lot of people have no internal monologue, and even for those that do, it's silent most of the time. They might hope to get that, but the typical case is for there to be no text or voice to extract.

As somebody who has unfortunately had to deal with people suffering actual psychosis stemming from some of the most terrible illnesses that can afflict a human being - no, this is not psychosis. What parent is describing is more akin to believing in astrology and tea leaves.

If you have to fully lose touch with reality to have psychosis then I agree. Accepting these kind of delusions is certainly along the path and we know that it can lead there with AI.

If somebody experiences psychosis while using AI, it’s because they have an existing mental illness and the AI use is co-incidental not causative of mental illness.

> Conduit is collecting immense quantities of non-invasive neural data

Stealing all my brain waves is called non-invasive now.

> That means we must scale up our data collection by orders of magnitude beyond what has ever been done in academia.

What you can do you can always overdo. And if it hasn't worked yet, it's because we haven't overdone it enough.

However doomed-to-failure these brain-dead ideas may be, the sheer unscrupulousness is top SV. Mix in some thought control, and you'll have plenty of investors.

From the article. >Thought-to-text, aka telepathy No, that's not telepathy. I'd leave the term alone. Consider it to be reserved for... well... telepathy!

Next you'll want the term "Artificial Intelligence" reserved for actual artificial intelligence.

Not gonna happen. All the marketing fairy tales have the snake oil perform wonders. LLMs may not be able to jump, but they do walk on water according to some.

If such technology actually existed I don’t think the fifth would cover it without a SCOTUS ruling. You have to actively plead the fifth to invoke it. A machine that could just read your thoughts would get around that the same way they got around the fourth by the interpretation that any information you exchange with a third party is no longer protected, in a world where refusing to ever do that would leave you desti…

Like I said, it is the philosophical basis.

Ok? The philosophical basis is only loosely correlated with the legal basis which is what the person you replied to asked.

Again look at the run around on the fourth amendment or the commerce clause ruling that made it so growing wheat for your own consumption was legally considered interstate commerce.

I don’t think what you’re describing is a run around. The fourth amendment rulings and the interstate commerce rulings are logically consistent with the principles of the constitution:
