If you're already trending towards 10x developer status in a niche area of programming, sure, AI will secretly make you less productive (in that niche) while making you feel like you're going faster, for a little while. For everyone and every other situation, hard disagree.

We're currently wasting a lot of time cleaning up slop created by overusing AI. The loop is: developer uses AI to create a huge amount of code very quickly. But the developer didn't understand the underlying system very well so the specs generated by the AI contain a lot of faulty assumptions and the code was then built on those assumptions. So you have features that probably shouldn't have existed in the first place…

Ironic plot twist, AI is just exposing your coworker's weakness. They could slow down and understand before blasting away at code, or explicitly hang back and generate tech demos/PoCs for architectural choices while building understanding, but they didn't. The only reason things were ok before was because they were handicapped to a speed slower than their ability to figure things out.

Sure, but you can't tell your photograph to make another one, or steal a soul. That's what AI is for.

Yeah, my takeaway here is less about AI, and more that these judges have no sense of taste and just gave more points to whatever packed in the most pointless details.

AI or no AI, it’s incredible that this design won. Either the judges have questionable judgement or the other entries must not have been very good.

Huh, I thought I was reasonably good at this but didn't see them. Rather than getting annoyed about it, maybe it could be a fun puzzle? Spot the AI glitches in this image. Maybe do that contest before giving the award, though, among the finalists?

I noticed two kids in Costco looking at some image on a box and calling it AI.

The fact that an AI work was selected says more about the judges than anything else

I’m not an AI hater; I use it every day now at work. But the output is obviously not human expression. You can tell. That’s fine for what I use it for.

For judges of artistic works to choose AI over other, actual creative works really devalues the judges. It tells me they don’t care if it’s good as long as it hits the expected notes. You can phone it in, whatever. Does it look the part? Great. An AI gave them an image composed of all the things they were looking for: check.

Really embarrassing on the side of the judges. They shouldn’t be allowed to judge works of art.

Actually, before HN there was Usenet which I assure you, as I know everything, was much more pedantic than HN ever was.
