It's not a great option. My "old" phone that I use to install junk apps (e.g. I buy some hardware that requires an app to set up) and which mostly sits in a drawer is a 2nd gen iphone SE, and it's getting to the point where I'm going to be forced to replace it, because the OS hasn't been upgraded in a while (it errors) and some apps won't install on it now.

I am running an iphone 12 mini without problems. I expect I will eventually run into them but at that point I'll just stop upgrading apps.

12 mini is pretty old. I have considered going to a 13 mini, but I sort of hate the idea of spending money on a phone that is already well on the path to unsupported. Then again, the compact options for grapheneos are limited to old stuff too. Sigh.

Since you asked... Tools.

I buy more tools than I should - Wood working, electronic, and more general purpose. It's not always cost effective, but I generally pick a new project (ex - making my dining room table, installing solar panels, building my own dining room chairs, making my wedding ring, etc) and then buy a new tool for that project.

Am I saving money vs just buying a decent premade thing? Usually not really (although sometimes!). But I get to learn, work with my hands, and expand capabilities, and feel nice having made a thing.

I can get a lot of tools (or a couple very nice tools) for the amount you'd spend on a new iphone.

Since we're having the conversation - I'll make a value judgement. I think more folks would be happier with the tools than a new iphone, and I think buying one every 2 years is a perfect example of "keeping up with the jones" style behavior - compulsive consumerism that's not improving happiness (With an understanding that there are exceptions - ex: if you develop mobile applications, I'll accept that a new iphone is essentially a new tool).

Oh ok that is impressive, true. The 10x lens from Samsung was also nice, I don't understand why they went back on that. I never got it though because it was only available on the ultra and I hate huge phones.

Like every holiday sale? Costco and Amazon discount Apple products all the time, and of course there is EPP and student pricing.

I cannot buy a 17 Pro at 15% off right now. And there are never discounts day one, so your point is moot, with this you get 0% interest on day 1

Selling my car that I fully owned in favor of a nice bicycle and an e-scooter was one of my best financial decisions in the last few years. A lot of people buy phones as conventional status symbols rather than for nerd points. My massive generalisation is hn values doing something interesting with the hardware.

Exactly. I'm talking about the green bubble vs blue bubble social nonsense that causes people to spend >$1k on a device that they use for talk, text, and basic media functions. It's essentially jewelry, nothing to do with nerddom.

My car is fully owned and justified by my commute taking 3x longer by bus. Time saved is as important a measure as miles driven.

We should ask some game theorists why the busses are so slow :-)
