I remember reading that back in the day North America used to have more trees and dense vegetation that squirrels rarely touched the ground since that was more dangerous for them, so they would use the trees like highways.

Tree squirrels are big on digging, they bury food for later retrieval and eat a good amount of terrestrial foods. You regularly see them on the ground even in dense forest. Flying squirrels stick more to the trees but their gliding ability means dense forest is not a requirement for avoiding the ground.

Funny I just went camping in a provincial park in Canada and I put a tent down on some dirt next to a tree which turned out to be full of buried nuts which was revealed when I tried to sweep away debris. You'd have no idea there were a hundred of them buried right next to the trees.

Pet peeve: companies that appropriate a dictionary term for their name, e.g. Apple, Google (& Alphabet), Amazon, Oracle. It's really not too hard to create a new name for your company, e.g. Microsoft, Facebook and Nvidia.

If you count Google as an appropriation of Googol, surely Nvidia appropriates Invidia?

Nah. "Google" is pronounced the same as the English word "Googol", so I do consider it appropriating. Meanwhile, Invidia is a latin word, which as a dead language, and it is pronounced differently from "Nvidia", so I don't consider that the same as appropriating a living language word.

Facebook isn't a new name either. Some schools would publish and distribute a book of student photos with names at the beginning of the school year, to help recognize peers; these were called a facebook. Yearbooks are similar, but published at the end of the year and also have a lot of content about what happened that year and organizations and sports.

didn't know that... In that case I should count "Facebook" as another violater.

nVidia comes from the Latin word invidia, which means things like envy, or jealousy. Microsoft (originally Micro-Soft) is a portmanteau of microcomputer and software. Facebook, as others have mentioned, is a compound word that was borrowed from what literal books of faces [and names] were called. When I think of non-dictionary names, I think of things like Mosptnspg.

portmanteaus are great, actually.

Didn't know that about facebook.

Non-dictionary names don't need to be as wierd as Mosptnspg. Could simply be Frodel.

"invidia" is an Italian word, so it does survive in living languages.

"Nvidia" as "officially" pronounced in English is not significantly different from some of those pronunciations.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia

And the founders seemed to be well aware of the existing usage when they chose the name.

Are volcanos natural occurrences? Meteors? Earthquakes floods and fires? Are humans natural? It's a pointless distinction, "nature" is plenty fully of destruction and extinction without humans ever being involved.

I’m sure the current mass extinction, which seems to have started at the same time a climate change, which itself started more or less when we learned how to dump unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere are causally related.

My point isn't that they're unrelated, my point is that mass extinctions aren't unprecedented.

> It makes no sense other than lobbyists and environment lawyers and other ticky-tack bullshit Those other countries also have lobbyists and environment lawyers, so your thesis reveals a lack of discernment. The poster child in the west for infrastructure projects is Spain, and i can assure you that Spain is not light on regulation. America has an interesting political structure - look there for your answer. Ultimate…

>so your thesis reveals a lack of discernment. You're really quick to just get angry mad and throw out insults over me saying something as benign as 'wow it'd be nice if California used our tax money as effectively as the example in the article?' Just seems like a bizarre totally mundane thing to get hung up on and then have this nauseating Karen-like condescending tone 'actually... the costs are totally justified, i…

I was perfectly diplomatic, and you've responded with yet another rant.

You've flooded the comments with your California railing, none of which offers any new insight. I don't believe you've put any work into understanding the problem.

You have convinced me, and likely many others who are capable of reading your tone, that you're more interested in identity signaling than analysis. Maybe you'll find your crowd on Facebook?

My point stands about the lack of discernment you've shown here. I won't be talking to you again.

Wah wah wah, make it personal because you're mad about facts:

-China built 820 miles of high speed rail in 3 years.

-The Golden Gate Bridge took 4.5 years.

-Millau viaduct in France took 3 years.

-But now we can't even build 2 miles of LAX train in the same time...

Costs and the completion time for infrastructure to be completed are horrible. You can keep defending this as totally reasonable all you want but it's exactly why our quality of life keeps going down and we keep getting outclasses by every other country.

California could be so much better if we didn't have a bunch of people like you always making excuses for everything and removing any accountability from our government. Keep electing the same people and you'll get the same results.

I always wonder how the world would look if the bible had said "Respect the earth and all living beings" instead of “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…"

In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the environment is not a resource, nor is it a god. It is a sacrament. A tangible vehicle of God's uncreated grace. Your status is that of a royal priest who stands between heaven and earth. You are to "subdue" the chaos within your own soul first, and then, with humility and awe, lead all of creation in a perpetual song of thanksgiving, protecting it as you would protect the chalice…

Thank you for pointing this out, as Eastern Orthodox Christian.

As another sibling points out, creation before the fall, so.the animals and humans in the garden of eden, were vegan. There is also a theory that Jesus was vegan and a belief that Christians should be too: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_vegetarianism#Biblic...

I was introduced to this idea by the excellent documentary https://christspiracy.com/ Video is an interesting format but I'm glad you shared that page, text is more appropriate to dive into a subject.

Bought the documentary and will be buying it for some friends, thanks!
