I think, in this case, being present at a 'comedy' event, this specifically might be taken as 'humor'

I watched the event live, and nothing about it was humorous, least of all the suggestion that the United States would even consider for a moment undoing one of our strongest Constitutional protections, term limits on the presidency.

You may not think he’s funny, or you can think a joke is in poor taste, but the correspondents dinner is one where jokes are told. Nothing there is supposed to be taken too seriously.

You know what is scariest? That on democrat Reddit posts about this, people were overwhelmingly agreeing that Obama should run for his third term as well, and they’d be glad to vote for him. Their rationale is that you have to fight fire with fire and can’t afford to follow the rules if the other party is playing dirty.

When citizens of both parties believe that “your guy” is allowed to break the laws to stay in power against the evil opposition, your country is not a democracy any more and there is no coming back from it.

Insane equivalency

I'm not saying I agree with the sentiment, or think during the current discourse it isn't a very touchy subject to try and pull humor out of...but if there's any event to take the President's words at the highest chance of being a 'joke', this is that event.

I mean, if ol’ minihands is permitted to run for a third term, then the US really is teetering on the edge of not being a democracy anymore, and it would be entirely appropriate for the other side to attempt to use the new rules (presumably declared by fiat) to try to elect a popular candidate.

I think they’re suggesting that expressing this logic justifies his bid for third term

Earlier quoted context omitted.

… I mean, I think that’s completely nonsensical. “The other side says that if I change the rules, they might take advantage of that change” is not really a gotcha.
