They are estimating a 25% shortfall in supply remaining in 2030, even with Chinese companies ramping up DDR5 supply. It's not looking great - the RAM producers need more of the same machines that other semi-conductor manufactures need and the suppliers of those seem unable to increase production.

It's good to know that despite warnings of a shortage in 2024, little was done in advance to prepare and now we're looking at years of shortfall for both commercial and consumer needs. Export controls preventing fab equipment being sold to China will likely extend it further. It will be interesting to see how much consumer electronics companies will be able to raise prices before people call it quits. Especially with…

I think it's important to note the context though: There had been a RAM glut that meant Micron lost money every quarter in 2023, with revenue almost halving vs 2022. This was post-pandemic, and demand had dropped a huge amount.

The RAM companies didn't have money to invest.

The government invented intellectual property for a reason, and in this context it isn't serving it's puprose. It's not some natural law or inalienable right, it's a government monopoly that trades public rights for scientific progress.

Although the CPU and motherboard do of course also have to support it, but with AMD it is possible. I do it on a 9800x3d. One bit errors are always both detected and corrected. Multibit errors are mostly at least detected.

as i understand it: that's in-band ECC and if you CPU/mobo support it, you can enable IBECC even on non-ECC RAM. IBECC has overhead, though. ECC RAM has on-die error correction, with corrections taking place before the motherboard ever sees it (and without the performance overhead of IBECC).

There’s a place for a “decoder” for this stuff, and that should tell you something.

I understand their reasoning but it’s still a shame Framework opted for a proprietary motherboard instead of mini-ITX with a socket CPU and GPU. I value repairability over a little bit of extra performance.

There is no socketable Unified Memory platform. The entire point of this SoC is that it has Unified Memory. The Framework Desktop has a Mini-ITX board, but you MUST use a solderable SoC with HBM stacked memory to get a Unified Memory outcome. For local AI workloads, that's the only part that matters, which is the entire point of wanting 192GB of RAM available on an APU. I like the repairability and modularity of my F…

Any SoC currently available does not use HBM for its unified memory. That's just stacked DRAM, wired somewhat more optimally because of shorter distances, making it able to go a little bit faster, and maybe wider. But not as massively wide as HBM is, with its load of many lanes. This may shift in the near future, in favor of more traditional stacking, cost/production-wise, vs. real HBM with massive speed improvements, at much higher costs.
