I hired a Chinese Haval Car for a weekend last year (Australia). It started beeping at me for being distracted because I was checking for traffic in the other lanes - which is crucial when driving in a 4 lane highway. Of cause, I had never experienced such a beep before, so I had to take my eyes off the road tp look at the screen to see what the reason for the beeping was. Then, on a multlane highway, I would indicat…

The car that's already in the lane has right of way and it's your responsibility not to plow into them. If they opt to make room for you, great (that's just courteous driving), but it's not an obligation. If you can't se…

> That is definitely not the point of a turning signal

Incorrect. The turning signal is called an Indicator, because it give other drivers an indication of your intentions. So you first look and check that it's possible and likely safe to merge. Then you indicate your intention. You then merge if/when safe.

Indicating an intention to merge into a narrow gap is fine - as long as you only merge when there is sufficient room to do so.

But if the car beeps at you just because you indicated - then there is a design issue.

> If they opt to make room for you, great (that's just courteous driving), but it's not an obligation.

Absolutely - I was not implying it was an obligation. I am only saying that you use your indication to indicate to other drivers your intention. It is totally valid to turn off your indicator and not merge after indicating.

If you turn your turn signal on while there’s a car in your blindspot that’s just bad driving. The other driver has no way of knowing if you’ve seen them or you’re about to swing out on them.

You indictor is an indication of your intensions so that the other drivers are not surprised when they see you car move from the expected path. If you are only a road with light traffic then yes, first adjust your speed so cars are not in your blind spot and then indicate.

But, if you are in tight traffic then a gap will unlikely open up. In this case you use your indicator to signal your intention, and wait until somebody chooses to let you in - making sure they have noticed you before moving in.

A car that beeps at you just because there is a car in your blind spot when you indicate is not suited to Australian road rules.

After a couple of days I figured out it was warning me that there was a car in my blind spot. WTF! The whole point of indication is to signal my intention to move, so that the car in my blind spot creates room for me to merge into their lane. "a turn signal is not a question, it is a statement"

A statement of what?

> Also, being constantly warned that I was speeding in rural areas where the car missed a speed limit sign caused me to start ignoring the speeding alarm within a few hours of driving the car. A lot of these features seem to assume that you're driving on a multi-lane motorway with well-marked lanes. I'm constantly being nudged by my ID.3 one way or another on rural roads. You can turn it off, but it turns itself back…

You can use OBD2 dongle to change default setting of lane assist to be off by default (after car starts) And many more setting that are decided for you as if you were using a rental car not your own. Like always reseting air conditioner to 22C after starting a car. God dammit i want 20C. Let it stay like that when i start a car.

For VW cars, that has been severely limited as well from 2024 with SFD2, which requires a token from VW. Quite sad really.

> You can use OBD2 dongle to change default setting of lane assist Colour me skeptical. ODBII is just a protocol; it knows nothing of the modules on your buses. I think you will find you need the dealer software. Tools exist that implement big chunks of that functionality, but since they are built on reverse-engineering, the price approaches the dealer software anyway. not affiliated. have used ODB eleven on my vw eup (2021). They have curious payment strategy. Basically you buy tokens and then use them for each enable/disable operation.

You can switch them off but only until the engine is turned off again. Most manufacturers have a shortcut on the dashboard or steering wheel though. Eventually you just get used to doing that every time you start driving.

There'll be firmware hacks to force that mode soon enough.

That hasn't broadly happened yet, and it's even less likely to happen in the future with encrypted comms and locked-down firmware increasingly becoming the rule instead of the exception.

There we maybe need some regulation that the system should be working, and the manufacturers of the cars should be forced to recall and fix the system if it doesn’t work! The solution to bad implementation can’t be to just throw our hands in the air and say that Kia produces bad cars so therefore we cannot introduce safety regulation

So, the fix to one bad regulation is another one?

We can also do nothing, continue to have hundreds of thousands killed every year and millions receive life changing injuries. I think that’s a terrible idea, though, since we have been able to (in the EU at least) cut road deaths massively over the last 25 years. So I think continuing a successful strategy is what we should do.

I sometimes wonder how these systems are being tested on the road and whether there's any feedback from the test drivers, or what kind of morons are there saying "this is completely fine, exactly like intended" when they read the feedback... My car has adaptive cruise control and will automatically adjust speed based on speed limit signs. I was on a highway at 130km/h and the car read a 60km/h speed limit sign that w…

It’s an important piece of a test drive before you buy a car for sure

FWIW Toyota implements these features perfectly. The speed warning is just a little color icon on the dashboard, the lane assist works well and doesn’t ever do anything unexpected. The auto-brake systems work incredibly well and have helped me several times when people blow through yield signs, yet never had a false positive.

If regulations don’t force the company to build a compliant vehicle that doesn’t suck, then we need to leave all the cars with poorly implemented systems unsold

You're correct that the dongle only facilitates the connection, but you don't need dealer software. I have an ODB dongle and a £20 (I think) app on my phone which lets me change a _ton_ of settings on my BMW which aren't available in any in-car menus.

What app?

Maybe you should ask yourself why you are not looking at the road in the first place.

I think it was clear that the poster was distracted by all the useless bongs and beeps and that was what caused the extra distracted driving bong or beep

That does not justify not looking at the road.
