The problem with the peace prize is it seems like its given out to people who they hope will bring peace instead of people who actually have brought peace. We don't award the chemistry one to people with a promising research program, we award it to people who actually have discovered things that we actually know changed the field. If we awarded the peace prize based on actual accomishments judged with the benefit of…

They didn't give it to Machado hoping she would bring peace. In fact, they did it for the opposite reason. They awarded it at the height of tension and build-up of US forces outside Venezuela, while they were blowing up boats in the Carribean, to encourage Trump to go even further. Something btw which Machado wholeheartedly supported and encouraged.

And you know this how?

The underlying issue here is that the Nobel Peace Prize is a useless, politicized joke. It appears to be almost designed to give newspapers something to write about. It's a shame it gets tied with scientific prizes which represent actual merit.

Now you need to look into the "Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel" - Economics wasn't part of Nobel's original endowment so the Swedish Central bank funded it in the 60s.

I cannot recall Obama doing one single thing for peace internationally? Which conflict did he help stop?

The Nobel Prize was given at the beginning of his tenure. Of course it was a majestic failure because by the end, he held the record of "most dropped bombs by any US president"... IIRC it must have been something 25-30k.

I imagine the 100k+ tons of bombs dropped on Gaza has subsequently reshuffled that list.

> he held the record of "most dropped bombs by any US president".

Disregarding WW2, I'd assume LBJ or Nixon holds that record.

Considering his approval rating is still in low 40s, and not 0, tells you volumes about the average American mind.

That was my main learning from the last election: The difference between Americans and Europeans truly is much greater than I'd ever expect. I really thought that it was impossible for Trump to get elected again. Everyone was warned, yet they wanted him back.

Of democracy, thats a feature, not a bug. The people spoke, the people received.

There is no flaw in the principle of that process. Its as old as time. Pontius pilate, 2000 years ago, had the exact same headache.

He is now presenting op-eds on YouTube.

An op-ed is an outside opinion piece published by a news organization, historically in a print newspaper or magazine. It's irrelevant if he's giving his opinion on a subject in a YouTube video; it's still not journalism (and it's not even an op-ed, since he's effectively self-publishing).

I don't consider Kimmel a journalist anymore than I consider him funny — all his jokes were written for him. He helmed a failing TV show, for which he was being paid millions.

None of that stops him from trying to present himself as a journalist or a comedian.

I know what an op ed is. You don't need to tell me. It doesn't have to be in print anymore. (You obviously looked up that definition somewhere.)

Kissinger was a horrific choice. You get no quarrel from me on that. But the Obama thing was ridiculous and they should have waited longer before giving him it.

Why wait longer was he going to become more black than he already was?

Maybe to see what he would do in his presidency? There's a thought.

> He got the prize before he did much mongering though. He and Nixon did plenty of mongering already in 1971, when they firmly backed and tried to cover up Pakistan's military atrocities in what is now Bangladesh. 10 million refugees didn’t prevent the Nobel committe from giving him the prize in 1973.

I think you might be replying to the wrong comment. I was talking about Obama. I do not believe Obama was doing a lot with Nixon in 1971, considering he would have been like 10 years old at that point. Not defending Kissinger at all.

Oh, I see, sorry!

It is just basic logic really. Hypothetically, If the Nobel committee was to right now announce that this year's Nobel Peace Prize was to be awarded to a Greenlandic independence/opposition activist - Some one who applauds and supports all of Trump's current rhetoric and actions wrt Greenland, someone calling for armed intervention/invasion. What would that say about the committee's opinion on the matter. What would the timing of such an announcement signal to the Trump regime and the wider world? What conclusion could one draw reasonably?

You mean like the 1949 Nobel Prize for Medicine being awarded to the person who developed lobotomy surgery?
