Its been plasma since 2009, a year after KDE 4 came out and they rebranded a bunch of their projects. Whether 16 years amounts to "ages" ig is up to interpretation.

KDE 4.4ish (early 2010) was when it finally started to become stable enough to be mostly usable, so that's close enough to just saying "KDE 4".

Unfortunately it's looking like KDE 6 is going to be another catastrophic upgrade, unlike KDE 5 which I barely noticed. Both of my Debian bookworm->trixie upgrades had showstopper bugs that required the terminal to fix KDE, there is multi-second lag unless you turn off some of the new features, and significant uninvestigated breakage remains even after that.

"Plasma [i]s Hell" is well-named, not that it's the only problem.

How is Slackware doing nowadays? Last release was several years ago, but I need a replacement for Win 10 on my PC.

It is doing well, I run both current and 15, rock solid, stable both in use and features. It has never given me anything to complain about, OS stays out of your way and even running current I never have to think about my system or worry about what is going to happen when I update. It all just works and sticks to the slackware way.

Why Slackware specifically? You can install any distribution. I use Gentoo btw - not really a distribution so much as a distribution construction kit. There are other popular distros, notably Arch.

For me, an OS should be something I never have to think about, slackware gives me that. Very little has changed in all the years I have used it and almost everything I learned all those years ago when I first installed it still applies. The scripts I wrote over a decade ago to setup and install some stuff on a fresh install, still work 100% and the only change I have made is to have it enabled PipeWire, which is one command.

Yes, but all the people who use it still call it KDE. At least in my experience.

I use KDE Connect and discovered a feature I didn't know about the other day.

I was watching a youtube video on my computer and my phone rang. The video automatically paused whilst I had my call, then when I hung up, the video continued.

Totally seamless. The kind of thing Apple would show off as part of their "continuity" between macos and iOS.

When I tried out Zorin OS I noticed that they advertised a connect-app as well which does exactly what KDE connect does. After a bit of investigating I noticed that the app is quite literally a 1:1-copy with just the name and branding changed, no features added, no bugs fixed. Does anyone know if KDE connect allows this in the first place?
