M1 is still fast, the speed of its successors does not change that.

I use one for software development and it's great. Sometimes rust builds are slow and I'd love to force that to be faster with hardware (optimizing build time would be a huge undertaking with not-so-great returns), otherwise I'm totally content. I also have an M2 Max with 32GB of RAM that still feels like magic. I've never had computers that felt so fast for so long.

I dunno, working with M1 daily I struggle with resource contention and slow py/js builds. I'd love something faster when work provides me with updated device.

I agree with that somewhat. But they still lost their main GPU kernel driver developer AND Also their uber productive user space GPU driver developer. With especially the loss of Alyssa leaving a basically unfillable hole.

Sure for M1/M2 it's somewhat correct that it is "completed". M3 and beyond have a lot of GPU differences though(A completely new microcode afaik), so the loss is still traumatic. I also don't think GPU perf is on the level of OSX though I did not do a recent one to one bench.

I know Asahi is in choppy waters this year, but it is a seriously impressive project in (imo) a good state. I was surprised that I could run a one-liner script and an hour later play a 32-bit windows x86 3D openGL game on an ARM apple machine with reasonable performance.

Asahi isn't in choppy waters. The new project leadership team made the decision to prioritize getting their existing work upstreamed into the Linux kernel, before working on supporting newer SOCs. It's been going well.

Oh, has Linus clarified Linux's position on rust patches in the kernel? I hadn't heard.

Nice. The iPads generally measure around ~8% slower than the MacBooks, I guess for cooling reasons. So we should see approximately a 4400 single core Geekbench score for the MacBook series. Nice. Lots of people still claim that M1 is super duper fast but now we're at almost twice the performance!

What is that, 6 years for less than a doubling? Nothing against the Apple chips themselves, but gone are the days of Moore...

Is it, tough? I feel like everything on my M1 is still as snappy as it was on day 1. My previous MacBook definitely showed it's game after 4 years, but I'm happy to use this one for at least another 2-4.

For me it was the memory limits more than CPU speed. Discord, Slack, Teams and a browser, and 16gb on my M1 was basically used up.

And here I am struggling with the 32gb version, always need more :P

Since Apple actually makes a significant amount of money selling hardware itself, I really wonder why they actually wouldn't allow people to install Linux on it, with a full support. After all, it's not like this would jeopardize macOS/iPadOS AppStore earnings — Linux users would simply buy into Apple Hardware they haven't even considered before, and only a fraction of macOS/iPadOS users would switch to using Linux.

do they disallow it or just not provide active support? Active support requires paying for employees to keep it working. Ignoring it and having volunteers do it requires nothing.

You make it sound like these are the only two options, meanwhile what they _most importantly_ fail to deliver is documentation.

And that's for macOS. For any other platgorm they actively prohibit any third party operating systems.

That's because your company's security department has virus scanners scanning every bit of code (including 99% of the virus scanner itself).

My company literally has four different apps “protecting” me now, including two different malware scanners. Neovim runs like it’s a 286. That said, before they’d installed everything it still wasn’t any faster than my Mac.

Sounds like you need to spend some time optimising your build. Faster hardware just makes developers lazy. I'm still on an M1 and it's fine, although I do have 32GB.

Yes, and as I mentioned earlier, the new leadership team has decided to upstream the existing work before moving on to work on supporting newer chips.
