There was another recent study that made the front page of HN (would have to search to find it) that found two "peaks" of aging, at 44 and 60. As someone in my late 40s, I certainly identified with that. I was in fairly good shape and feel like, despite some grays and some crows feet, my body was relatively the same from my early 20s to my early 40s. 44 really did hit me like a ton of bricks though - working out got…

I'm 30. I feel 70. No clue why. I take vitamin supplements, I exercise, I try to sleep, I had basic blood test. Nothing.

Try a keto or even better a carnivore diet. It has been transformative for quite a few people. It doesn't work for all but it is a form of elimination diet, and at least for me, most plants cause me substantial gut & inflammation issues. There's a lot of dogma around "eat plants to feel better", but for some it's the opposite. My guts have completly healed from heavy issues after switching to 99% animal sourced diet(mostly fish, but also clean simple meat)

Have you happened upon Keith Barr’s work on tendon repair? Up to a few years ago tendon injuries were thought to be mostly unfixable (you could strengthen what was left of an injured tendon at best) but Barr’s work is proving otherwise. And using a very low risk isometric exercise protocol. It won’t make you feel 32 again but it might help you get rid of a lot of lingering aches and pains.

That's Keith Baar; I looked it up. Keith Barr focused on musical technology at MXR, Alesis and eventually Spin Semiconductor. His legacy is MXR pedal effects like the Phase-90, the MidiVerb digital reverb series and the Spin FV-1 digital reverb chip.

Thank you for the correction

How's your diet? Do you get plenty of vegetables? Cruciferous especially. Do you avoid fried foods? Alcohol? Caffeine? Sugar? Consuming enough high quality protein? How's your sleep? Do you avoid eating within a couple hours of bedtime? Are you waking up to pee in the night?

I used to eat a salad every day until recently when I decided I can't be bothered to visit work canteen anymore. They gave shit food but I'd always take an extra big salad of raw vegetables. Recently my diet got worse. I used to love cooking, but now I can't be bothered, so it's instant ramen, milk with buckwheat, or potatoes + egg + bacon + fried vegetables. Not sure what "high-quality protein" is. I had a period wh…

First thing I did was just get out of the house and go to the gym. I work remotely, it became a trap where I spent all my free time sitting in front of the computer. Prioritizing at least an hour a day 5x a week was huge. I just made the time. I did that for about 2 years with good results. I was 240lbs. I looked big at 6’1 but had lots of fat. I snored all night long, affecting my wife’s sleep as well. About 1 year…

How long do you intend to be on trt? I hear the body returns back to its previous low levels on stopping.

The rest of my life, i see no reason to ever come off. I will of course cycle on and off the steroid level doses for health reasons but I intend to run testosterone in the range of ~200mg / week forever. I am considering doing the same for glp-1 medication. I’ve reached my goal weight but not sure if I see a reason to ever come off of a maintenance dose. I am not fully decided on that yet though. Im in the process of tapering down the glp doses and experimenting to see if the lack of diet control returns.

I’m 49 and haven’t noticed much. I’m in better shape now than in my 20s and 30s so that could be obscuring things. It does take longer to recover from an all nighter at work than it use to so there’s definitely that.

Do you keep physically active? I am a couple of years older. The main thing I notice is that I want more sleep and have trouble getting it.And the grey hair.

No harm in adding probiotics to your daily diet. Kefir, Kombucha, Kimchi are a few.

Will look into that thanks!

All I can say is that they have helped me — and I also had digestion issues.

Sure, if you're 50 and haven't been taking care of yourself at all, starting right now is better than never starting. But there's likely going to be some ceiling you hit, a ceiling that would have been higher had you been taking better care of yourself your whole life. > I think this is bullshit. At the risk of being "that guy": can we keep the temperature down? That kind of reaction feels unnecessary and is the way…

What is the “ceiling” though? Sure, you’re not going to walk on to an NFL team but you will def. feel better from a more active lifestyle and healthier diet even at 50+

Doesn’t matter. Any “feeling” you get at that point is just endorphins and placebo. As soon as you stop, you quickly feel like shit again.

A lifetime of bad eating and no exercise means your arteries are clogged, nothing you can do to change that you just live with it, and physical activity could eventually give you a heart attack as your heart fails to keep up with the new demand.

You will likely have little muscle mass, most of your body will be a bunch of layers of fat covering small weak muscles, and at age 50+ your body is simply not going to build muscle the way it used to, if at all. On the contrary, if you had built a fit muscular body early when you’re young and maintained it all your life, your body in old age would be mostly dense muscular structures, and thin layers of fat. Two old people can appear the same size but have radically different compositions underneath. Even though we lose muscle as we age, the best defense is to have plenty of muscle to spare. The muscles also help in the regulation of insulin.

And then of course there’s the issue of bones. Physical exercise and lifting weights builds strong dense bones and if you’ve neglected both then you’re plunging into old age with a bad skeletal foundation. Your bones will be brittle and hollow and more prone to breakage and unable to tolerate stress. Building strong bones takes time, it’s measured in microfractures. At 50+, you don’t have time.

With bad bones, bad muscles, and a bad circulatory system, it’s easy to see how you should be in a bed “getting some rest” instead of out doing strenuous activity where you can break something easily.

I don’t have a workout regime but I do walk a lot. I have adhd so can only take staring into the abyss of dancing colors (my laptop) for so long. I wfh and there’s a coffee shop and small grocery store that is a 30min walk round trip from my house. I make that walk maybe 2 or 3 times a day.

I don’t sleep that well but am working on it. Ever since I had my first kid (15 years ago) the slightest noise or interruption in the middle of the night and I’m 100% awake ready to rock. I was the night duty parent for both kids so that’s where that comes from I assume.

In my 20s and early 30s I did a lot of drugs and was blackout drunk two nights per weekend. Having kids and a no nonsense/assertive wife put an end to that with the side effect of dramatically improving my health and career.

But there have been astronomically high qualities of humans produced, none of which have shown this phenomenon.

Combinatorics can make things astronomically unlikely. Imagine the "aging program" bugs out 1 in 100 times, a pretty high failure rate. However, imagine the program runs in 10 systems in the body, and success in any one of these systems is enough to age and kill you. The body is quite fragile after all. If this were the case, then in order to not age at all, a person would need not just a 1/100 event to occur, but a…

Serious question. There are biblical accounts of people living hundreds of years. For people who like to find scientific explanations for biblical stories, is this plausible?
