It's kinda wild how monolingual people can come into a thread of multilingual people pointing out specific problems that are happening due to forced autotranslation and be like, "well this hasn't happened to me personally so it's probably fine for normal people and not a real problem."

#332So it tries to dub urdu videos (as 'hindi' videos) into english, or dub english into hindi, which is useless for me both ways.
Instead of dubbing, make better subs! YouTube subs fail to track when using the video speed feature, so if i am using any other speed playback than 1x, the subs don't load on time, and sometimes get skipped, fix that!

For reddit things get even worse: not all commenters realize that the original post has been translated, so you get a flood of comments from people commenting in their native language. Getting modern day tower of babel vibes from that.
> not all commenters realize that the original post has been translated Does it actually say it is somewhere obvious? My girlfriend and I both looked something up and each got the same Reddit thread, but one in English and one in Chinese. She had no idea hers was translated. But I also thought it was supposed to do the reverse if someone comments in the translated language, adding an original-language comment instead…

What drives me nuts with this is that they'll go for a weird guessing game instead of using the language settings that the browser is providing in every single request. My browser states that I favour English, then French. My user profile on the website has "English" as language. Yet, when I get to the homepage, it tries to guess my language from my IP. NOOOO.
When you look around the comments here, you will see that while people agree on how this should be handled (list of languages spoken, in some preferential order) there is no consensus of where this should list come from. It could be system - but there is a surprising amount of people who set their OS to some language they are learning, or just English for convenience. And they do not want this to affect the web. It c…

Ah, well, the content has to fit localized ads! That's it! (You don't want that distracting break in languages between revenue earning productions and embedding media fluff. I guess, in this context, the plug-in is as evil as ad-blockers are.)
Good point about avoiding the distracting break. In fact, there must be an incentive here for Google to auto-translate a video only when it can sell an ad in the translated language for more than one in the original. I suppose we should be glad that they've not (yet!) gone that far, or it would become even more of an unpredictable mess from the end user's point of view.
(I can see a bright future where smart TVs come with mandatory, non-optional instant translation… and maybe, if we were allowed to dream, with realtime character replacement and background adaptation to fit the next ad context. It's the logical step forwards from colorized B/W… /s)
Re: YouTube No Translation
#337The fact that there's a massive delay for auto dubbing is crazy to me, it's not done in real-time, why have the delay?
What delay are you talking about?

Because displaced honorifics alone is too much. Translated audio railroads is match was a draw. worse.
That's the perfect example! I honestly still can't tell what "match was draw" is supposed to say, but that's a really good match for the actual experience.
Re: YouTube No Translation
#339It's surprising how hostile youtube is to multilingual users. Probably all in some attempt to show off their translation capability or to improve the experience for users who may want to access content in a language they don't speak? Or it's just as dumb as this was on some product managers "designed and implemented" line to get promoted? But, surely someone sane there has to realize there is a large number of users…
Average user is not multilingual. Target group is average user. End of story.
It's not that you have to be able to speak multiple languages, understanding several is still common.

Similarly, plenty of folk born in the UK whose first language isn't English. I have many friends who grew up speaking Scots, and a few whose first language is Gaelic.
> whose first language is Gaelic Is that really true though? I think it's a bit optimistic to say "first language". I know that many people do speak Irish, but the number of people who can speak Irish better than English is abysmal. No Béarla[1] is one of the saddest documentaries I've ever seen. It follows a native speaker who tries to do mundane tasks in Ireland using only Irish, but can barely get anything done. […
And yes, it's not exactly common but there are still people who were taught Gaelic as their first language. Some of them I consider to be friends.
