These cards are $550-$600 16GB is great for what these are: Gaming cards. Even on the nVidia side you have to spend $2000 (likely more) to get more RAM than that. You could buy 3 of these for the price of a single nVidia 5090.
On the Nvidia side every GPU released in the last ten years competes against what AMD is doing today. People who need more VRAM go with dual 3090.

#73So about 20% better value than Nvidia comparing MSRPs. Not terrible but that’s what they offered last generation and got 10% market share as a result. If the market price of Nvidia cards remains 20-50% above MSRP while AMD can hit their prices, then maybe we have a ballgame.

I am not surprised, ROCm focuses on CDNA. Was RDNA in ROCm ever officially supported?
RX 7900 (RDNA 3 flagships) are officially supported. I think the 6900 (RDNA 2) was supported at one point as well, and in both cases other cards with the same architecture could usually be made to work as well.

Nvidia has long been ahead of AMD. They seem to be close to parity right now thanks to Valve’s efforts, but that has historically not been the case. AMD was the one that needed a decade to catch up until Valve started helping. I wonder if the Radeon driver has gotten reliable GPU restart support. On Windows Nvidia has better drivers. On Linux, AMD is far ahead.

There's that new NVIDIA driver cooking, but I'm not sure what the status is on it.
BTW, even Ryzen 3 is a substantial upgrade over 1. Any X3D processor (I think 5 is when they first appeared) is even more so. Ryzen 5 is also less sensitive to RAM timings. I applaud you for avoiding latest-and-greatest syndrome, but even upgrading to an older CPU generation would be a significant boost.

I helped a friend install Linux last year; they had an NVIDIA card, aaaand they had problems. Both in X and Wayland. I'm was on a 6000 series at the time and it worked great, as you know. I am on a 7000 series now, and it's as smooth as ice. AMD is the way to go for Linux. There's that new NVIDIA driver cooking, but I'm not sure what the status is on it.
