“The debt is increasing at a slower rate” isn’t really enough when interest rates are non zero. As the US has to keep rolling its debt to higher interest rates it’s going to continue to escape decline even with significant cuts to spending

OK, but if the debt was the actual issue of concern, then we certainly wouldn't be cutting taxes (income) at the same time, would we?

Are you trying to say that the efforts to reduce the deficit are a circus, designed to get us riled up and entertained, so we don't notice the absolute dismantling of proper constitutional procedure so that billionaires pay lower taxes? Whaaat? That can't be possible!

Look at raw data, not media reports. I posted a link already. The UK's economic growth is very similar to comparable EU economies. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/gdp-per-capita-worldbank?...

That’s one metric but it’s not enough to answer the question and misleading in key ways. Average GDP is not the same as the average person’s income, and you can’t say whether that’s good or bad without also looking at the cost of living. If your income is not going up at the same rate as your expenses that positive trend turns out to be a mirage and that’s where much of the reported pain for Brexit has been since int…

GDP is adjusted for inflation.

Some trade barriers have also been lowered since Brexit, reducing costs - e.g. EU protectionist tariffs and quotas on things such as oranges and rice which reduces the cost of living.

The effects of Brexit are tiny compared to the lingering effects of Covid, and the increase in global prices caused by the invasion of Ukraine.

Absolutely incorrect. Musk holds power because he spent $290m on the election boosting the winning candidate.

But the money didn’t win the election.

source?

> opposing side can provide a reasonable logical explanation for the Musk/Trump actions Maybe it is like with Mozilla. You send money to Firefox development, but it pays for Marxist get-away conference in Africa. Once academia gets rid of bloat, there will be far more money for science and engineering!

They slashed grants that pay science. Science ia going to be cut.

Science has this pesky problem of generating facts. Where we're going, we don't need facts!

Again, if these agencies are never actually held accountable, this is functionally identical to "unaccountable". I mean, what if Congress created them to be unaccountable? Then both things would be true!

Are you claiming the fbi has never been called to testify before Congress? or are you claiming that it didn't happen enough? or that it didn't happen for the things you personally wanted it to happen over? these are very different situations, and it appears you wish to defend the motte and get the bailey for free?

No? I wouldn't consider the FBI to be an "unaccountable organization".

I never said all government organizations are unaccountable? Just that (practically-speaking) some organizations are unaccountable because they rarely (or never) are called to account by those who are supposed to hold them accountable. This could be due to them simply being a low-stakes organization that demands very little attention, for all I know!

Interesting that you call out a specific fallacy whilst bringing your own strawman into play!

Just that there is no practical difference between "seeming unaccountable" and "being unaccountable", especially if, as you say, "the levers of accountability could have been pulled", but weren't. If the departments aren't being held accountable, they are, by definition, acting unaccountably. You seemed to disagree, and be trying to make a distinction where no practical difference can be found. You also seem to agree…

The distinction is precisely in what criteria they're held accountable for, in the context of politics with many differing interests. Your cry about "being unaccountable" pertains to what you personally think they need to have been directed to do but weren't. The mechanism is there. If Congress is not passing new legislation to change agency actions, that de facto means that Congress is content with the current actio…

I don't think this is mutually-exclusive to what I'm saying?

It's equally plausible that the reason Congress has not called an organization to account is simply because that organization is beneath Congress' notice. Congress has as incredibly broad mandate, and necessarily prioritizes. This means some organizations are simply not enough of a priority to warrant any attention.

It is in this dearth of attention that waste can thrive!

Since Woodrow Wilson.

The Dangerous History Podcast has a very interesting series in Wilson. The host was not a fan.

I'm going to give it a listen, thanks. I found this funny and interesting interview with the host, safe to say, you're right he's not a fan! :)
