Technically the US has never dropped nukes, those were atomic bombs. Second, don’t understand how the atomic bomb argument makes sense. Germany was developing them and would have used them if it got there first. Are you suggesting the US really is truly the only nation that would ever have used atomic weapons? That if Japan made it first they would have spared China or the US?
Care to explain how an atomic bomb is not a nuke?

Most of the early research into computers was funded for military applications. There is a reason why the silicon valley became a hub for technological development.

#286Many will hate to hear this but the only solution is one world government or at least a unipolar order that reduces the survival need to participate in arms races. Arms race dynamics between nations will be the end of our species.
Unfortunately, the only way to keep things "fair" and "equitable" so nobody revolts is to reduce everything to the lowest common denominator.
In other words, everything would be terrible, but at least it'd be terrible for everyone.
Until we realized we could sacrifice some for the betterment of the rest, find a way to rationalize it, and then we throw it all out the window.

I would say it's natural. Their one and only incentive isn't as they are trying to tell you "make a word better place" or similiar awkward corpo charade but to make a profit. That's a purpose why companies are created and they are always following it.

How is it woke nonsense to not want to create a weapon that probabilistically determines if a civilian looks close enough like a bad guy to missle strike them?
This sentiment ignores the reality on the ground in favor of performative ideological purity - civilians are already getting blown up all the time by systems that do not even attempt to make any distinction between civilians and soldiers: artillery shells, mortars, landmines, rockets, etc.
And indiscriminate has a cost that can slow people from using them.
Imagine you have a weapon that can find and kill all the 'bad guys'. Would you not be in a morally compromised position if you didn't use it? You're letting innocents die every moment you don't.

#289Why on earth would a for profit company refuse a potential line of profit? They already dumped "do no evil" many years ago and they are now all in on fuck the poor and fuck the rest: I'm making profits and all is fine. Google makes money and they don't appear to care how - its all about the money.
Google is a company that relies to a large extent on users to trust them with their data and for advertisers to want to be associated with them. Hence they have a stronger incentive to avoid being seen as an evil corp then some other companies. This is also important for recruitment, as many engineers do not want to (be seen to) work at a privacy invading evil corp, so it is important that google creates plausible deniability for those engineers as well.

People try to cope and say others are guided by lies. In the US, people knew exactly what they were getting and I’m true the same is true in other “democracies”.
