As a leftist, while this is concerning, it's also important to remember that Meta censors left content as much as it does right content. So, while this announcement certainly seems to be in bad faith (what could Mark mean by "gender" other than transphobic discussion?), this should be a boon both for far-right and left discussion. Does that mean increased polarization and political violence? Surely, surely.

> while this announcement certainly seems to be in bad faith Not really though. It means that feminist campaigners can advocate for single-sex spaces and services without the looming threat of being banned. This is great news and a win for free speech.

it is undeniably in bad faith. the ToS was updated to use the phrase "transgenderism" which is used exclusively by right-wing anti-trans actors.

It's used by left-wing gender-critical feminists too.

Can you evidence that Musk posts things that are provably true?

I don't read Musk's tweets, or really any tweets that aren't directly linked to me by friends.

That's completely irrelevant to the discussion, however. GP asserts that Musk takes actions to protect "...the misinfo he posts". The burden of proof is on GP to establish that Musk posts "misinfo[rmation]", a word which I understand in context to mean "content which is provably untrue". If you think it should mean something different, please explain why.

I feel the same way and I think the writing is on the wall for the near future of the world. It is disheartening to see people on a forum like HN who I assumed have values similar to mine fall right in line with conservative propaganda and try to act like this isn't an overtly political action. This decision is political, and it goes a lot deeper than left vs right - its about attacking support for a baseline scienti…

Yeah, its pathetic. Fwiw, not everyone on 'hacker' news is like this, and many of the thoughtful ones are smarter than I am and skipped this post entirely. But its so disheartening the rot in the Silicon Valley ideology that's everywhere here.

>the rot in the Silicon Valley ideology

What exactly is SV ideology?

imo, some combination of TESCREAL ideas https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/TESCREAL , the "disrupt" and "move fast and break things" startup hustle culture , a distaste for anything "political" , and "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" style libertarianism / anarcho-capitalism

What you're talking about is statistics. Statistics are not irrefutable facts. They're data points from a report, and they are often incredibly easy to manipulate depending on how the macro is assessed. Usually it's impossible to gather stats over large, complex, chaotic populations. Instead samples are taken and applied to the whole and interpolated in-between. And in that interpolation an incredible amount of manip…

If, in an argument, you want to go back to the data and do different or better statistics on it then by all means. I would _love_ to have a disagreement with someone that went in that direction and we could discuss the intricacies of how to interpret the information that we have. I have my own gripes about the statistics done by various groups, with changing the inflation calculation being a recent example of the bad…

> Most disagreements (at least in my experience) are not reaching this level, and are instead diving towards anti-intellectualism and dismissing statistics and data interpretation wholesale.

Not without reason though. Many statistics are pretty bad and very partisan. Unpacking this is not trivial, and who wants to invest that effort to settle a debate with one other person?

After reading that, it seems TESCREAL-ists, for lack of a better word, currently prefer conservative policy due to its loosening of regulation because regulation tends to tighten the reigns on "move fast and break things." I'm not sure how TESCREAL is antithetical to conservatism, which seems to be what you were implying. To me, it seems TESCREAL-ists will support any political party who has the least likelihood to regulate them as the primary deciding factor. This seems to be evident from the political support the TESCREAL-ists described in the article (Musk, Andreessen, Thiel) have given. Can you elaborate more to help me understand how you feel TESCREAL idealism and current conservative ideology are antithetical?

I'm sure it's a win for Meta (less responsibility, less expense, potentially less criticism, potentially more ad dollars), but certainly a loss for users. More glad than ever that I deleted my FB account 10 years ago, and Twitter once it went X.

My twitter account wasn't big, but it was non-trivial (~30K followers). A post could usually get me to experts on most topics, find people to hang out with in most countries, etc. There were many benefits, so deleting was very hard. But it was eating my brain. I found myself mostly having tweet-shaped thoughts, there was an irresistible compulsion to check mentions 100 times a day, I somehow felt excluded from all th…

I have a policy of not following anyone with a large number of followers, as they are generally not worth listening to I've found.

Anyway I'll probably delete my twitter, haven't used it in a long time.
