that is because in america a large majority of people’s entire identity is tied to one of the two political parties. there are no liberals who believe is small government and state’s rights, no conservatives who believe in woman’s rights or that america would collapse without immigrants… for majority of people every single opinion and thought they have just magically lines up with one political party - maaaagic… henc…

The democrats made a fundamental miscalculation in the late 90s that you can simply pander to brown people and they will turn out for you. The messaging is complex because you tell different audiences different things, and the Internet makes it complicated because conservative Hispanic Catholics don’t align with the platform. In doing that, they ceded rural America, which was devastated by NAFTA and other Clinton era…

Giant agribusiness makes money, but the prosperous dairy operators really need regulation at the federal level to thrive.

good thing we elected a party that loves nothing more than federal regulation… /s

I am neither democrat nor republican so I have no skin in the game here but I think this thinking here is very naive.

[flagged]

A lot of the deregulation under Carter legitimately did need to happen.

The Motor Carrier Act and Staggers Rail are the only ones that come to mind? Shipping costs were high and routes were guarded and inefficient, and the railroad industry was in shutters. What else had you reckoned?

Looking back, to me he was a much better president then people believed in the 80s. I believe if he got re-elected in 1980, the US would be in a much better place. One thing, it could be argued real work on Climate Change would have begun in 1981 as opposed to where we are now, which is just watching the average probably blowing past 3C in around 70 years from now. For his loss in 1980, I still blame Kennedy. RIP, he…

He had Kennedy trying to steal the convention and Jon Anderson running as an independent. But the hostages sunk his reelection. To paraphrase Cicero: were it not for the fact he had been president, Carter was the kind of man that everyone would say he would make an excellent president. RIP Mr Carter

Hostage situation that Reagan's campaign pushed to extend.

With good reason.

Carter deregulated more than Raygun. Raygun introduced more gun regulations than Carter. Both parties are worse than the other on the issues they promise to be better on. It's almost like it's a big club that you're not a member of.

That may be, but that doesn't make them the same.

While I agree with the general sentiment, I think the same could have been said regardless of which candidate won. It feels like the left moved left, the right moved right, and instead of catering to moderates, threatening them to pick a side. Said another way, I think a young Jimmy Carter type candidate would have wiped the floor with either side this election.

"Both sides" doesn't really correspond with reality though. She made a concentrated effort to reach out to people on both sides, including the Cheneys, of all people.

Both sides of the right wing, the only wing.

>it could be argued real work on Climate Change would have begun in 1981 as opposed to where we are now That's a common myth. 70s energy policy was a result of the oil crisis, not environment concerns. Sometimes the result was conductive to the environment (e.g. efficiency increases), sometimes it was less so (various US gov research into more polluting alternatives like synthetic oil or shale oil), and sometimes it…

The Environmental Protection Agency was started by Richard Nixon in 1970. The clean air act was in 1967.

We were talking about energy policy. It was well known at the time policy was motivated by the oil crisis and environment was a second fiddle:

* Aside: EPA and the Clean Air act weren't motivated by Climate Change but by particle pollution concerns.

Probably the best post-presidency legacy of any in my life time. Beyond that he was just a good human, he worked to better people's lives. After him, the only one that has done much is W and that's more in the wounded warrior arena. But that is small compared to Carter.

>"Raygun introduced more gun regulations than Carter"

People forget this, Reagan literally started the charter and expectations for the modern gun control movement just because of Black Panther advancements and protests in the street with firearms.

The current infighting between republicans over H1Bs seems a counterexample.

the current infighting is not actually a good example… trump was bought by highest bidders which are not really republicans at all - it was just easier to win an election going to the right. the infighting is between an absolute outsider who inflitrated the party by first buying twitter to turn it into a propaganda machine and then when that wasn’t enough needed boots on the ground to ensure he gets control. you don’t ever hear DJT anymore, he now just raises his head to confirm he sides with elon… so there is really no in-fighting at all

Quite - the environment was not much of a concern.

Bear in mind that lead in petrol was your anti-knock agent and the catalytic convertor didn't exist.
