I agree. Also, tangentially related: I use a black and white filter on my phone, and it is way harder to distinguish fake and real media without the color channels to help. I couldn't immediately find anything in the subway clip which gave it away.

I have been subscribing to ChatGPT Plus for a long time. I just cancelled my subscription today because every time I try to login to sora.com, I get the too busy message. I have never been able to try it. Pissed me off.

Tencent has a comparable open weight model dropped in the last week that looks at least as good.

I get that. But, let’s say you have a glass, you fill it to one third, then to half, then to three quarter, then to full. Can you expect to fill it beyond full? Not every process has an infinite ramp. It seems frontier labs have been throwing all the compute and all the data they could get their hands on at model training for at least the past 2 years. Looks interesting. I am on the hunt for clean tools for producing presentations. I really like Powerpoint, mainly because of their animation and vector editing features. However, I don't want to keep using a proprietary tool.

If you're the coder/hacker type you might like Typst. It's a typesetting tool but it can create presentations too and I like it better than Powerpoint where I have to manually edit and align everything on every page to ensure a consistent style.

no one is shooting blockbuster-grade CGI for stock footage though; the casualness of this is what will be the most impactful

People use cgi to generate the background in romcoms because it's cheaper than getting permits for location shooting.

I don’t see how that analogy makes any sense. We’re not talking about containers of a known and fixed size here, nor a single technique, nor a single method. Stuff like LLMs using Transformer architectures might have reached a plateau, for instance. But there’s tons of techniques _around_ those models that keep making them more capable (o1, etc), and also other architectures.

Shorts are designed to trade your valuable attention for trite, low-effort content. Most decent shorts are just clips of longer-form content. Do yourself a favor and avoid that kind of content, opting instead for long-form consumption. The discovery patterns are different, but you're less inclined to encounter fake content if you develop a trust network of good channels.

This is also my strategy. AI content makes me focus even harder on the source of the content instead of the apparent quality, because the current set of GenAI techniques are best at imitating surface-level quality features.

What are some good channels you recommend?

even if there were supposed benchmarks or comparisons, you wouldn't know if they were reliably until you can actually try it and see what it does how you'd use it.
