this comparison looks good, but it claims that there is no opt-out for microG in /e/OS. yet, in the app settings i can simply disable microG completely. is that not sufficient for opt-out?
That row covers whether or not the opt-in/out is provided during setup wizard, not post install. If there is such an option then you can report it here: https://github.com/eylenburg/eylenburg.github.io/issues

Download what from F-droid? When I search for microg I only find location providers.
You have to add the microg repo. F-droid used to have microg, but it was causing issues in the past.

Thanks for the tip! However, I get a signature error after freshly adding their repo and trying to install it. Also their QR codes are broken on the website. Are we talking about microg.org?

They should learn from Google, and package their maps so they can be streamed to clients piecemeal. I bet they spend more in data egress than compute, and PostGIS is basically made for this.
That's the default way to use OpenStreetMap, either with vector or raster tiles. I'm guessing these apps did it this way for a reason, probably to support the offline usecase and not need a separate way to do it.
Great for travelling.
Also cool to check where you are on planes, on non intercontinental flights that don't have screens.

I would use iPhone, but I like Syncthing way too much.
There is Mobius, which works pretty well. Not as well as on Android, but better than nothing.

Graphene also has a way to sandbox Play Services, and may even allow Google Wallet using that, making it so that they don't have to dual boot.
'may'? Does it work or is it wonky?
