You are right about any given data centre in the short run. But you can use money to rent more data centres.

Hate to break it to you. That is getting harder and harder. Certainly you can get a couple mw, but if you want 50, you are going to find that to be extremely challenging, if not impossible.

Are you saying people stopped building data centres?

You can also pay to get more data centres built.

The large ones being built today are spoken for already. That is how crazy the demand is right now. People aren't talking about it in the general news. They can't build them fast enough cause things like transformers, generators and cooling are all having supply issues.

Even still, power is limited. You can build DC's but if you can't power them... what are you going to do? This isn't just throw more money at the problem.

Have you noticed that data center stock, like EQIX, are at all time highs?

This can work out so great if you do it well. In the legendary books Securities Analysis and The Intelligent Investor they recommend this approach if you are serious about researching and they also recommend diversifying into a variety of stocks - certainly more than 3. Personally I like your approach much more and it’s why I’m building https://ultimatestockpicker.com . I feel like there’s a ton of money rushing into…

And the easiest way to diversify is to buy index funds. In the long run you do far less work and you probably beat people picking stocks and trying to compete with extremely well resourced finance firms. The comment above you is a great example of survivorship bias. He picked well. That is rare.

FWIW, you can compete in arenas where extremely well resourced finance firms literally don't allocate people. The return on an obligated I'm not saying it's the best thing to do: it's an allocation of time and energy that you could put towards literally anything else. Basically, it requires ongoing education and discipline, as most worthwhile things do. But it's a valid financial choice and the circumstances for success are less rare than you give it credit for.

It's a bit like concluding that it's not worth working for a startup because 90% of "startups" "fail", or whatever the quoted statistic is these days. The published and oft-discussed maps are not a complete representation of the actual territory – there's a lot of nuance in there.

Though the FTSE All-World index (or the S&P 500) is also at all time highs, so I would expect most stocks to be at all time highs, too.

I guess you can try to outbid other people? But thanks: I didn't know the data-centre-building industry was so supply constrained at the moment.

Nvidia is still run by a founder, while the other two aren’t. I’d always bet on a founder over a McKinsey consultant or a Harvard MBA.

survivorship bias here. also it has become a bad habit to judge everybody based on market cap or stock price. this has significantly contributed to margin-chasing behaviour in the industry lately.

they just tasted this level of success. i would be cautious and wait a few quarters before handing out judgements.

Don't take this advice unless you want massively subpar returns. The idea that picking individual companies is "gambling" is quite frankly ridiculous. The information around NVidia being a great company has been around for years and years and was obvious to anyone who took a look at the company performance. The same is true for companies like Netflix or Shopify. I invested in all three of the these companies for the…

A lot of shit can happen to individual companies that is unanticipated or unlucky. For example, Boeing had been a pillar of American engineering for a long time. We had no reason to doubt that the producer of one of the most prolific and reliable jet liners would ever have any issues, but then it did. The facts are that it is incredibly hard to predict the trajectory of individual companies even with insider informat…

Well I guess I've been lucky for ten years in a row then. Maybe you should tell Warren Buffet he got lucky too.

Doing research and investing based on it isn't being lucky. It's called being prepared. Rolling a dice and picking stocks and then making money IS being lucky.

If you massively diversify you are just going to get whatever the market gets and no alpha. If you are close to retirement, this makes sense. But for young people, generally your risk tolerance is higher and you have more time too. Here it makes sense to learn about companies, research, do your due diligence, and invest in individual companies.

https://github.com/vosen/ZLUDA They still funded it and it was created.

They only reason it is open source is because they decided not to go this direction. They gave it to us instead of tossing it into the trash. I don't know what you mean to imply by that.

There’s nothing to imply. AMD funded a CUDA compatibility layer that now exists.

Just because they don’t want it doesn’t mean it just vanishes or stops working.

Half is still crazy; 1/4 is what I would consider a little high (I'm a value investor). Especially for a tech company, I don't understand the rationale behind high valuations. A high valuation makes sense to me if the asset will deliver a reliable cashflow over time, or if there's a high chance it'll start making much more cash in years to come. More reliable / more growth = higher premium. But tech companies come an…

Value investors often miss exponential/crazy growth stories.

I don’t care about missing stories; I care about overall performance over my lifetime. And on that metric, value investors rarely miss.

I never claimed to have “fail to understand my point” ? Are you sure your not misreading something?

Le sigh. I said big-cap tech used to get in trouble with the DoJ a lot, but has gotten finance-good at lobbying and so they don't get slapped hard anymore. You said that I was stringing together talking points and not citing concrete examples. Let me (start to) Google that for you: https://www.sec.gov/enforce/sec-enforcement-actions-fcpa-cas... https://www.justice.gov/atr/antitrust-case-filings-alpha https://www.csoo…

What does 'Le sigh.' mean?

And I never mentioned 'not citing concrete examples.', if your confused about the ask, I'll repost it: "can you write a credible argument based on known case-law/precedent/etc... "

i.e. Can you write down the actual argument that you propose to advance?

I knew you'd say that. SMCI though. It isn't just the macro. It is this AI stuff and has been going on quietly behind the scenes for the last 1.5-2 years now. Unless you're deep in the business, it just doesn't make the news headlines because it is all so intrinsically hush hush.

> I didn't know the data-centre-building industry was so supply constrained at the moment.

The whole supply chain is borked. Try to buy 800G mellanox networking gear. 52 week lead time. I've got a fairly special $250 cable I need that I can't get until April. I could go on and on...
