Given it just needs to be done once, and a hdcp stripping device is easy to get, how does that work?

>Given it just needs to be done once Since it is still the early days I think they are hesitant to ban every insecure device once one is discovered. This greatly decreased the cost for attackers. >and a hdcp stripping device Those only work with older versions of HDCP. Over time newer versions of HDCP will keep making the security better making it eventually impossible for an external splitter to work. No such splitt…

Even if HDCP 2.3 was unsplittable (it's not, you just can't buy the tools on Amazon) it's a futile effort by rightsholders due to the analog hole. There will never be a way to show someone a video without showing them the video.

Streaming became popular because it was easier than piracy and better than TV (watch anywhere, on demand, pickup where you left off etc). Streaming is no longer easier than piracy, why pay for 8 different services and have to waste your time figuring out whats on what when you can just have one service for free, even if its illegal, and have it all under one roof. The services have taken the piss and now they'll get…

Dear god this! And the fact that if you don't use some special app or special magic combination of a device type and app, you won't get the 4k streams your f*cking paying extra for!

I discovered after 2 years of paying for netflix premium whatever its called the most expensive that i was only getting 1080p on most of my devices because of the app i was using or browser i was using or god knows what other reason.

Yeah, also pirated content has: - 4K HDR video, not whatever the heck the buggy client delivers. - Atmos/TrueHD audio track that actually works, not whatever the broken app delivers (I'm looking at you Sky and rest of the ilk that still deliver HBO content with stereo). - Subtitles for ALL the languages, not just one or two. And those languages don't disappear when I go on a vacation, leaving me stuck with german aud…

Netflix and real 4K HDR is a joke considering you need some magic formula to assure all your devices are actually "eligible" to get what your paying for.

I used to try to go 100% online rental (primarily amazon rentals if I didn't want hassle). I figured it was hard to argue a 3.99 rental was any worse than blockbuster. So on vacation I tried to airplay mission impossible from amazon rental to the TV, and the screen just went black for copy-protection. So I refunded my rental and torrented it instead. I don't usually torrent, but sometimes the ecosystems put it square…

Try disabling hardware acceleration in your browser. It'll probably fix the black screen issue. The situation is still ridiculous though. Streaming is no longer easier than piracy.

Nope this is DRM "protection"

This is DVD Player dependent and no it didn't carry over to the BR. My favorite videos for all the problems with DVD and BR: AVGN's You Know Whats BS series: (warning a lot of cussing in the following videos) [1: DVD]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsdzaEVeFEE [2: BR]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tetXKdi9U3c My favorites quote at the end when he was comparing DVDs to VCRs: "Its like we are going forward in tech…

> This is DVD Player dependent If you mean the unskippable content then no, it's not DVD player independent.

You are going to need to provide some proof regarding that.

A set top unit typically respects the blocks put in place by the DVD author (some rare models have a hidden menu provided by the manufacturer that can bypass things like region coding and this).

Most software players(VLC for example) totally ignore any rules placed on the dvd and allow the user to do whatever they want.

> There’s a highest value turd of all the turds in my septic tank but it doesn’t mean that turd is valuable. If turds are the highest value resources that you have, and you have some scale on which you can value them, then yes, it does mean that particular one is valuable. 'Value' is largely subjective. Maybe you want to make some fertiliser? Hopefully it's obvious that the contents of your septic tank are not your h…

> 'Value' is largely subjective Lol then why were you trying to correct my largely subjective view of whether my time is valuable. My life is fine. I’m realistic about it and don’t need to pretend.

Righto - I will intrude no further then.

I too understand this logic and follow it to the T. You know that indie filmmaker who spent his lifesaving filming a movie I now get to watch on his dime? Well guess what. No 4k video and no international subtitles makes that guy deserve not seeing any money come back from his hard work. I'm not a thief. The indie filmmaker is a thief. He stole my subtitles and 4k video. In all seriousness, I pirate shit too. But am…

"Indie filmmaker" is not going to be on Disney+ or AppleTV. If they get there, they are not "indie" anymore, by definition, they are corporate employees of a trillion-dollar corporation, and their income depends 100% on how they negotiated with the corporation and 0% on whether or not I watch that movie via AppleTV or via torrent. I have AppleTV subscription anyway (through one of the free offers) and I still may prefer to watch it via torrent because it's more convenient. So don't push that BS about robbing poor indie filmmakers. That's not what happening. What's happening is trillion-dollar corps dividing the market and trying to extract every single possible dollar of value from the clients.

> The guy is literally pirating shit,

No, he is literally not pirating anything, unless he's in Somalia and attacking a cargo ship right now. And yes, he has the full right to call the parties who produced the situation where torrenting is the most convenient way to consume content an asshole - because they are assholes. I remember the time where doing that was not necessary - to the point that I almost forgot how to do it at all - but then the assholes came and now you have to pay for 15 different services, with crappy apps and unskippable ads, so yes, it's assholery. And it has nothing to do with indie anything.

The OP was annoyed they bought a podcast they liked and then put it behind a UI/UX which is hard to use. Presumably if Spotify went out of business Rogan would end up back on the open market. Turns out the new deal lets Rogan put shows back on YouTube so it doesn't matter. BTW, I agree about the Spotify UI. I never liked it and was a GPM user until they destroyed it by pushing me to YTM. Now I use AM, since if I'm go…

Out of curiosity I tried to find the podcast in question on the Spotify iPhone app. Literally 3 taps and I’ve found a full list of episodes. I’ve also tried on my Mac, slightly more presses (four, to be exact) as I had to press ‘podcasts & shows’ to refine the search slightly more. I don’t see how that’s hard to use. Each to their own though I guess, I’ve not seen how difficult it is your side so can’t really comment…

The biggest problem is not the difficulty of using, but the impossibility of using. The issue is not so much that features are difficult to find/access, but that the most basic of features don't exist anywhere at all.

They cannot help themselves. Just like buying and watching a DVD/bluray was much worse than a pirated copy, as the DVD/bluray made you sit through an increasing amount of unskippable content. From "do not steal this" to "not for kids" or, worst of all, "did you see this other content?". Btw. Ads in front of streaming content I just selected, to tell me about other streaming content on the same service I did NOT selec…

I'm looking at you, Apple TV+.
