Eh? > 3rd of January until today sits at 1256 searches 1256 / 23 (days between today and Jan 3rd) = 54.6 searches on average per day. Some days higher, some lower. Sometimes it can take a couple of tries to get the search right, so you do 5-10 searches in one minute maybe. Doesn't seem farfetched to me.

> For sure I'd do 300 searches in a week, and on a particularly hairy day I might do it in a day.

Yeah, that's "on a particularly hairy day", not "per day" for a full month...

I didn’t say it was every day.

Ok, well, thanks for the intellectually stimulating discussion, I hope you have a nice day :)

I hardly use search engines anymore. So there's no point in paying for Kagi. 90% of the time I'm not looking for a website, I need the answer to a question. I can either spend 15 minutes sifting through clickbait sites until I finally find the answer, or I can spend 15 seconds asking a chatbot. For the handful times a month I still need to find a webpage there's no point in paying for one..

> 15 minutes sifting through clickbait sites

The reason people like Kagi is that it doesn't show these (anywhere near as much), the top result has the answer

Hmm I tried it in the beginning (when they still had a monthly free allowance) and I didn't really find it significantly better than DuckDuckGo which is what I normally use (I almost never use Google).

But my point is that they introduced it a little too late. I'd have loved to have something like this a few years ago but now most of my search engine activity is being displaced by LLMs.

And DuckDuckGo already meets my needs enough for when I do still need it (yes I know it's just a skinned version of Bing :) ). And I don't have to bother logging in to it on every computer and phone I own (I easily have 10 computers and 6 mobile devices in my home alone).

Add-ons are terrible because they fingerprint you.Javascript allows for sharing of addons names. Having this niche add-on coupled with your device and browser type, IP, timezone this gives unique fingerprint. This comes from someone who used to have 50+ Firefox add-ons.

Why does this matter?

Because people who really need the privacy can be identified. Ideally, you want to help them so that their browsing don’t stand out (so that their browsing and yours are virtually the same).

"If you search for a search engine but only find the one that gives you a stupid t-shirt - you truly are in need of improving your search abilities"

[flagged]

I just cracked open with this comment. How do you drop that out of the blue without even bothering to make an argument?

The founder willfully worked for one of the worst companies of the Internet era - Godaddy! If you're too young to remember, look up what kind of atrocities the SOPA and PIPA were. I hope the founder burns in hell along with the rest of the GoDaddy management.

"Plugins" like "This browser can natively view PDFs." are detectable via JavaScript. There's no way for a site to see Firefox add-ons.

it should be noted that this is different on Chrome https://browserleaks.com/chrome
