Does anyone actually believe Altman has no financial incentive in his OpenAI work?

Bill Gates has been pledging to give away all his money for the last 20 years.. :-) In 2008: "Bill Gates pledges to leave his £30billion fortune to charity... rather than his children" - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1027878/Bill-Gates-... In 2022: "Bill Gates pledges to donate ‘virtually all’ of $113bn fortune to his foundation" - https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jul/15/bill-gates-b... In the mean…

He’s much better at giving it away when he thinks he is investing. Stuff like shorting Tesla. Hence, some traders have started to follow something called the Inverse Gates Index.

This kind of stuff is the reason why Altman was fired. The board lost trust for his honesty from many small things that kept accumulating. Altman is back on condition that there is a investigation.

And yet in multiple interviews he says he is not in it for the money. Saying that you are not in it for the money is becoming like a fashion statement. What’s wrong in saying that you’re in it for both money and passion?

It's been a fashion statement for a long time. Every corporate "mission" is such a statement.

Who can forget "the orb", altman seems like a complete clown who lucked into the holy grail that is openai: https://fortune.com/crypto/2023/03/21/sam-altman-orb-scan-ey...

A high school grad is in charge of a cutting edge AI startup.

Generally I wouldn't gatekeep, but here, it seems apt.

Because on social media virtue signaling works better than good deeds.

We called it 'tunneling' during 90s in my Eastern-European homeland. Like digging secret tunnel in one company where you have influence and transfer it's wealth into other company that you own.

I'm reminded of how Eskimos apocryphally have 30 different words for snow

Apparently a hoax - http://www.lel.ed.ac.uk/~gpullum/EskimoHoax.pdf

But the main point of your comment still stands :-)

You don't know that for a fact, you're speculating

Most of the stories about the firing included the fact that Altman was raising money for a chip startup from middle eastern funds.

It sounds a lot like background briefing to me...

It actually is, if you care about where it goes

And also if you care if it's sustainable.
