Who is driving the company (companies)? Certainly not the board, when it can be ousted on the whim of one person. Might as well just get rid of the board (all boards in this organization) as any decision made can be overthrown by a bit of publicity and ego. Perhaps it about getting rich at the expense of any ethics? Those who work for this company should bear this in mind, they are all expendable!

Hacker News represents hackers, not Boards of Directors. The hackers of OpenAI overwhelmingly demanded Sam back. Everyone here should be happy.

Reading through comments I felt that at least superficially many in HN thought this was a fight between "business exec(s) and technical/qualified scientists" as if any organization can exist based purely on technical (as in technological or academic) expertise.

If anything, this novela should tech the importance of politics in any human organization.

if i was him id leave, do my own thing.

Google or AWS or Cohere will welcome him with open hands.

Larry Page was pretty pissed off with Elon Musk for poaching Ilya [1]. A great opportunity for him to come back to Google.

What alternatives are you currently looking at? I’ve just begun scratching the surface of Generative AI but I’ve found the OpenAI ecosystem and stack to be quite excellent at helping me complete small independent projects. I’m curious about other platforms that offer the same acceleration for content generation.

Azure offers a mostly at parity offering. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-services/openai/w... Edit: I misunderstood the ask, my apologies.

That’s fair but I’m mostly building prototypes with the API intended for exploring the space so I’m not too worried about productionizing these yet. I was curious if there’s another solution that meets or exceeds OpenAI for quality of content and ease of use. I’m an ex-programmer working as a PM so most of this is just learning about these tools.

Why? If the product is useful (it is to me), then why do you care so much as to the internal politics? If it ceases to be useful or something better comes along, sure. But this strikes me as being serially online and involved in drama

> why do you care so much as to the internal politics? agree and why did they go from internal politics -> external politics (large scale external politics)

> why did they go from internal politics -> external politics (large scale external politics)

My guess is it has something to do with the hundreds of employees whose net worth is mostly tied up in OpenAI equity. It's hard to leverage hundreds of people in a bid for power without everyone and their mother finding out about it, especially in such a high-profile organization. This was a potentially life-changing event for a surprisingly large group of people.

Because you don't rely on a business that had 80% of its staff threaten to quit overnight?

Getting fired and rehired throughout five days of history-making corporate incompetence, and Sam's letter is just telling everyone how great they are. Ha.

It might be history making for corporations, but it’s only slightly below average competence for a non-profit board.

There was a tweet that from an engineer at OpenAI that they're working on the problem that ChatGPT has become too "lazy" - generating text that contains a lot of placeholders and expecting people to fill in much more themselves. As for the general brain damage from RLHF and the political bias, no word still.

they're B2B now, that means only political correctness. and I'm not sure why anyone dances around it but these models are built by unfiltered data intake. if they actually want to harness bias, they need to do what every capitalist does to a social media platform and curate the content. lastly, bias is an illusion of choice. choosing color over colour is a byproduct of culture and you're not going to eradicate that b…

What does political correctness and bias mean in this context?

edit: I'm asking because to my eye most of these conversations revolve around jargon mismatch more than anything else.

So looks like ilya is out

If you mean out of the board, yes. But then so are Sam Altman and Greg Brockman.

Yeah, but no. "We hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI" is not the same as "returning to OpenAI as CEO" and "returns as President". Not very subtle difference, even, huh?
