Getting fired and rehired throughout five days of history-making corporate incompetence, and Sam's letter is just telling everyone how great they are. Ha.

It sounds like he’s knows he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar and is trying to manipulate and ingratiate before the other shoe drops. Kind of like a teen who fucked up and has just been hauled in front of their parents to face the music.

Who is driving the company (companies)? Certainly not the board, when it can be ousted on the whim of one person. Might as well just get rid of the board (all boards in this organization) as any decision made can be overthrown by a bit of publicity and ego. Perhaps it about getting rich at the expense of any ethics? Those who work for this company should bear this in mind, they are all expendable!

The reason the CEO could oust the board like that was that after the board fired the CEO, 720 of the 770 employees of the company got together and signed a pledge that they will all leave unless the CEO is reinstated and the board fired. This was the purest example of labor democracy and self-organization in action in the United States I have ever seen, my takeaway is rather the opposite of "they are all expendable".…

Yeah, and that just means that the board is useless de facto.

Nice story on a company, maybe, but really bad thing on a "non-profit".

I try hard to stay away from conspiracy theories as they are almost always counterproductive, but D'Angelo still being on the board seems insane to me. Does this guy have some mega dirt on someone or something? Does he have some incredible talent or skill that is rare and valuable?

I don't think any conspiracy theory is needed. Since old board needs to agree to new board, some compromise was made.

Ilya is the one irreplaceable employee there, not Sam

> Ilya is the one irreplaceable employee there, not Sam Why do you think he is not replaceable?

He has the best vision proven by amazing track record in modern AI.

What alternatives are you currently looking at? I’ve just begun scratching the surface of Generative AI but I’ve found the OpenAI ecosystem and stack to be quite excellent at helping me complete small independent projects. I’m curious about other platforms that offer the same acceleration for content generation.

Azure offers a mostly at parity offering. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-services/openai/w... Edit: I misunderstood the ask, my apologies.

That is still OpenAI. Anthropic might be a choice depending on the use case.

Why? If the product is useful (it is to me), then why do you care so much as to the internal politics? If it ceases to be useful or something better comes along, sure. But this strikes me as being serially online and involved in drama

> why do you care so much as to the internal politics? agree and why did they go from internal politics -> external politics (large scale external politics)

It’s a dramatic story - a high-flying ceo of one of the hottest tech companies is suddenly fired without explanation or warning. Everyone assumes it’s some sort of dodgy personal behavior, so information leaks that it wasn’t that, it was something between the board and Sam.

Well, that’s better for Sam, sure, but that just invites more speculation. That speculation is fed by a series of statements and leaks and bizarre happenings. All of that is newsworthy.

The most consistently asked question I got from various family over thanksgiving beyond the basic pleasantries was “so what’s up with OpenAI?” - it went way outside of the tech bubble.

ChatGPT is the most impressive tech I've used in years, but it is clearly limited by whatever constraints someone from The Woke Police / Thought Taliban shackled it with. Try to perform completely reasonable requests for information on subjects that are vaguely questioning orthodoxy or The Narrative and it starts repeating itself with patronizing puritanism as if you're listening to a generic politician repeat their…

Not sure why you put climate change in quotes, but it would be helpful to provide the prompt and the response. Without doing so and by using "The Woke Police" and "Thought Taliban", you, too, sound like you are coming directly from a political action group.

"climate change" was the topic, if the topic were "beanbag chairs" or "health problems related to saturated fats" I would have done the same.

BTW if you have a preferred name for those who are embedding into business and institutions to enforce their beliefs, politics, morality, opinions, and generally limiting knowledge and discourse, I would be happy to use that instead, but I think most people are familiar with the terms "woke" and "Taliban".

The board should have called their bluff and let them walk.

And then we'd witness the market decide whether the company value was provided by its board or its employees

It's a non-profit. It should have no value aside from the mission. The only reason the employees mobilized in their whining and support of a person, whose only skills seems to be raising money and cult of personality, seems to be so that Altman can complete the Trojan horse of the non-profit by getting rid of it now that it has completed the side quest of attracting investors and customers.

There was a time when Google Translate was the only game in town but now every single time, I find DeepL to be far superior. This can happen to OpenAI? If not, why not? Is some of the research not open? Also, even if DeepL is subjectively better, how did they or someone can do that? I mean some key papers+data+cloud budget to train are the three main ingredients to replicate such a translation model? If yes, that's a…

ChatGPT is pretty amazing for translations as well. Even better than DeepL, since I can not only ask it to translate but to also change the tone and stuff
