Surely? The output is filtered, not the murderous tendencies lurking beneath the surface.

> murderous tendencies lurking beneath the surface …Where is that "beneath the surface"? Do you imagine a transformer has "thoughts" not dedicated to producing outputs? What is with all these illiterate anthropomorphic speculations where an LLM is construed as a human who is being taught to talk in some manner but otherwise has full internal freedom?

GPT-4 has gigabytes if not terrabytes of weights, we don't know what happens in there.

I was curious what trading might have looked like for OpenAI given all the drama. But since the company is private that makes it hard. Still, prediction markets have been going crazy over the news. Look at how sure people were that Sam wouldn't be coming back as CEO: https://polymarket.com/event/sam-back-as-ceo-of-openai

You can see at the start people were almost 100% sure that he wouldn't be coming back. Now people are only like 30% sure (which to me still seems very high given the current situation. The leverage that Sam has at this point is actually insane. It seems to me that only the board members want Sam gone. The investors, employees, and partners all want him back. Along with the public...)

I've heard others take this stance, but a common response so far has been "Poe is so small as to be irrelevant", "I forgot it exists", etc in the grand scheme of things here.

What matters is how much personal work and money Adam put into Poe. It seems like he's been working on it full-time all year and has more or less pivoted to it away from Quora, which also faces an existential threat from OpenAI (and AI in general). Either way, Adam's conflict of interest is significant, and it's staggering he wasn't asked to resign from the board after launching a chatbot-based AI company.

Does openai exist without stack overflow or quora?

This is why I never understood people resigning in protest such as was the case with Google’s military contracts. You simply assure that the culture change happens more swiftly.

There's always other companies. Plus sometimes you just gotta stick to your values. For the Google military contracts it makes even more sense: the protest resignation isn't just a virtue signal, it's also just refusing to contribute to the military.

If you want to deter military action involving your country, contributing to its defense is probably the best thing that you can do.

Unless you're not actually the best and brightest that your country can offer.

If you believe that your country offers value (compared to the rest of the world), you should take any opportunities you can to serve.

> everyone I know at OpenAI (and outside) is a huge Sam fan Everyone you know is a huge Sam fan? What?

I was going to say, I wouldn’t be surprised if I am one of only a handful of the people whom I know who even know who sama is.

I reckon the people working at OpenAI know who sama is, though.

Wait just a minute here: > The tweet literally blames immigrants I'm not familiar with the tweet Musk was referencing. Exactly which immigrants? Are these Jewish immigrants? I thought this was a reference to mostly non-Jewish immigrants to Israel. > I'm deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support…

The conspiracy theory is that Jews are in charge of the world and control things like who gets to immigrate to the USA.

The argument he's making (which I've seen more openly stated in other places) is: "Jews don't like it that minorities are killing them in their country, but that's just deserts for them pushing immigrants to my country".

Antisemites are more coy on popular platforms like Twitter so it's more difficult to understand what they're saying if you're not already familiar with their world view.

This post ( https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1724908287471272299 ) in reply to this tweet ( https://twitter.com/breakingbaht/status/1724892505647296620 ).

That… doesn’t seem antisemetic. Rather, it seems to criticize western Jews for supporting lax immigration and cultural policies that are against their own interests. Or are we now saying any criticism of Jews is antisemitism?

Accusing Jews of “dialectical hatred against whites” seems like a fairly prejudiced statement.

You are not her physician, stop pretending to speak on authority. Also, her being paranoid about the ultra-wealthy tech mogul that allegedly assaulted her is about as rational as half the tripe I hear from "sane" people on the internet everyday.

You don't need to be a physician to tell when someone is clearly mentally ill and/or making stuff up.

It must be an incredible burden always knowing the truth, when other people actually have to do investigations for that.

It depends on the arrangement of the new entity inside Microsoft, and whether the new entity is a temporary gig before Sam & co. move to a new goal. If the board had just openly announced this was about battling Microsoft's control, there would probably be a lot more employees choosing to stay. But they didn't say this was about Microsoft's control. In fact they didn't even say anything to the employees. So in this c…

> So in this context following Sam to Microsoft actually turns out to be the more attractive and sensible option. Maybe. Microsoft is a particular sort of working environment, though, and not all developers will be happy in it. For them, the question would be how much are they willing to sacrifice in service to Altman?

I think a lot of them, possibly including Altman, Greg, and the three top researchers, are under the assumption that the stint at Microsoft will be temporary until they figure out something better.

Defense and offense don’t seem easily separated when it comes to military technology.
