Some of us remember our 2008 MacBook pros GPUs dying and apple refusing to fix it. Their electronics have, however never let me down.

Didn’t they end up recalling those and changing the main boards for free (of course, those replacements were also having the same issues as the original boards). AFAICT they still refuse to touch a nVidia GPU over this. It is not a common occurrence.

It was a 2008 laptop and they decided it was a real problem by 2014 or so, so 'yeah' after 6 years and wet know what happened after. My iPod was replaced within an hour when it broke.

only laptop I know carved from a single piece of aluminum. not the only reason but for sure that one is a good one. No other laptop feels as solid and I don't understand why nobody else does it.

I haven't had any of the recent MBPs, but my 2020 HP EliteBook's main body looks similar to my 2013 retina mbp, which already had the "unibody" construction. If also feels quite solid when I hold it by one corner while open. The lid does feel somewhat flimsier, though, especially the hinge.

I have a Dell that looks the part when it’s sitting on a desk, but is actually quite flimsy (the underside is actually plastic, and the hinge does not look strong at all, the screen shifts colour when a slight pressure is applied on the lid). And it is a middle of the road Latitude, not a €1000 MacBook Air.

This is very reductive of the impact the iPod and iPhone had on the market. Every product has little bits and pieces of other products in it's DNA but to say the something like the iPhone didn't create the Smartphone market just because the Blackberry or the Sidekick existed is a little silly. I'm not saying these are not great products, or that they didn't raise the bar. I'm saying they all launched with directly comparable competitors, and everyone knew what it was supposed to do. In popular imagination, the iPhone was supposed to make calls, send text messages, take pictures, and play music. A cameraphone, iPod and BlackBerry. The fact that I can make such an equation should be a hint that we're not talking blue ocean.

And maybe even the Newton. That was a better example of "blue ocean" product strategy.

Realistically where would you position these monitors? Ergonomically there aren't many great solutions for any extended use especially once you go up to mutiple large monitors. Tilt your head in those directions and see how long you maintain them comfortably. If you think modern notifications are less distracting I'll respectfully disagree.

Three monitors along a curve on a curved desk with a rotating office chair (or just one on wheels) is perfect. It might be OCD but I don’t like two monitors because there is a gap between screens in the middle. I can physically rotate to face one side monitor or the other. I am never tilting my head for more than an occasional glance and this setup provides sone kind of task repartition in space, which helps me with switching contexts.

From an ergonomic point of view this is no different than using a single monitor. They are at the right height and the right angle and with a good chair. The trick is to rotate the chair rather than your head. And it does take a bit of space.

The productivity after the second screen decrease because the software sucks at support those configurations. With specialized software ( multi track AV) and/or ad hoc setup ( e.g. deeply tuned Linux) the more the screens you throw at it, the better.

Virtually perhaps, physically there's a limit. https://www.viewsonic.com/library/business/monitor-ergonomic... ViewSonic doesn't account for more than one monitor for an ergonomic workstation, and I've never seen it done well myself.

There’s a paragraph under the title “Account for Dual or Single Monitor Arrangements” on that web page. They just say that you have to be particularly mindful of ergonomics if you have more than one. How is that not accounting for more than one?

The only reason I was able to use my 2012 MacBook Pro 15 as my daily driver for 11 years, is because I was able to replace 2 failed non-soldered SSDs.

Those were old SSDs with I presume much lower capacity than modern drives

The first one was 512GB. The ones after that 1TB.

No write intensive usage. Just normal office use with occasionally compiling code.

Two things I've been waiting on for years: • MST (DisplayPort daisy chaining) in MacOS. The hardware has supported it for over a decade. The OS is the weak link here. It's the difference between spending $75-$300 for a dock in addition to the cables and just connecting the monitors together along with a single cable to the first monitor. • Non-soldered storage. Seriously. Storage is the most likely component to fail.…

It is widely known macOS paging out a lot more than Windows. On a multiTab Safari you could easily have 100GB write or higher per day. Kernel_Task lock up are extremely common on google search.

Watch the video I linked. Modern Macs are a single capacitor failure away from shorting 13v straight to those "amazing focus on quality" SSD chips. Either one of the two chips dies, you have a brick. No booting from external drive. Nothing. A brick. All because one capacitor fails.

If it were just a matter of replacing a capacitor, I'd agree with you. But the wiring decisions from their "amazing focus" defaults to a 13v short to storage chips—all your files AND the BIOS up in a puff of literal smoke.

And finally, Apple doesn't design and manufacture solid state storage devices. They contract out to other companies. Those other companies also sell NVMe storage devices with substantially similar chip designs.

Don't believe the hype. A ten cent capacitor taking out a $3K laptop isn't "above and beyond"; it's penny pinching at the expense of reliability with no concessions made to either repairability or resilience.

Apple devices aren't engineered to last; they're engineered to be manufactured, sell new, and sometimes sell expensive repairs by them. Also, NVIDIA cards in eGPUs and Thunderbolt (arm64) aren't supported. The best solution is either don't use Apple, or have a machine under warranty and very good backups. I guess you should say include "Modern" Apple Mac. Macbook Post 2015 are pretty bad compare to older MacBook. Those who are EE or interested in Hardware should watch a few of Louis Rossmann video.

But then because the rest of the industry are so poor in reliability they still get to say they are once of the most reliable notebook. May be apart from Lenovo.

The future is batteries with more charge cycles, not replaceable batteries. The solid state battery people are claiming 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. If they can achieve that, it's 27 years of battery life. The case will wear out first.

Exactly. And the calculation should be Total Energy output per cycle. i.e In the future your Solid Sate Battery will last 2-3 times longer per cycle. Meaning you will only have a full recharge cycle once every three days if not more. A Solid State Battery that degrades to 80% after 1000 cycle super fast recharge would still provide you with 8 years of usage time.
