I would say it's more Softbanks fault[1] in this case - NTT DoCoMo's and KDDI's Emoji was clearly pouting IMO, Softbanks was... more angry-ish? Especially the earlier, pre-2008 versions. There‘s a couple of the original Japanese emoji that have the problem that their visual idioms don’t translate 1:1 to Western idioms, and thus have unfortunately now been distorted in the process.

#125I feel like “lemon yellow” is an unsatisfactory approach to the lime; a like is not a yellow lemon. However, most citrus fruit are hybrids; they could simply add citron, pomelo etc as basic emoji and then ZWJ citrus to their hearts’ content.

Skin color emojis are the weirdest thing. I always find it slightly odd if someone changed them from the default yellow. Why would one care?
Speaking as a person with light-colored skin, the default-yellow emoji still basically look like me. Or, a version of me that's on the Simpsons, at least. I imagine that if I had dark skin, I'd feel a bit alienated by this experience. I'd be using these symbols that were supposed to represent me / my-reactions, but which very much didn't look like me. Just because I would be delighted if I never saw another emoji ever again doesn't mean it is OK for me to interfere with other people's desire to discuss them.
Emoji are only a minor annoyance in my life. I must not blow a minor annoyance out of proportion.

The reason they do this is for backwards compatibility. It’s much nicer to have “lime” show up as a lemon with a green square than an empty box replacement character.
Also, I’ve eaten some half green, half yellow lemonoids. The color consistency of lemons and limes is mostly a supermarket fiction.
