Meta likely didn't buy the domain. Some shell company does, then sells it to Meta.
that makes zero difference to the cost

There's an important point you make. Google plus failed. But a few of us loved it, because of its interface and ease of managing for the large part, but also because we interacted differently with and with different people than on Facebook instagram etc. Whereas Facebook to your point is dominated by my friends and family (but less and less their original content and more and more with copied "memes), Google plus rap…
Threads is definitely going to be dominated by friends and family. It already is, it’s just that and memes. Twitter is much closer to your Google+, and Threads in no way will be anything like that from what I’ve seen of it over the past few hours

> google plus was a rich mine of unbelievably high quality content from fabulous people. Naive question here from a non-user: With all that goodness, why did the product fail?
Instead of developing it further they forced plus logins onto youtube, and after struggling for a year with that, and seeing no meaningful adoption, they rolled everything back, and then sunset Plus.

#324The permissions[1] the android app wants are rather terrifying. Think I'll pass. [1] https://play.google.com/store/apps/datasafety?id=com.instagr...
Navigating to threads.net on Firefox Linux gets me only a swirling-galaxy animation, with a scan code drawn on top. Non-responsive to mouse clicks or key strokes.

How many divs does it take them to center 1 word? Glad you asked! About 13. How many CSS classes? About 90.
Yes, 90 distinct CSS classes. 13 nested divs. To center one word

Text posts with your Meta friends sounds like Facebook from 2010. What is old is new again, I suppose.
What problem are they solving? No one has any idea. Info keeps exploding instead of shrinking.
Think of it as the match Zuckerberg lit to mask the stench of the Horizon Worlds carcass.

#327I feel like there’s a chicken and egg problem for Threads: it uses your existing Instagram social graph to populate your Threads account. Of course FB is going to do that otherwise they lose a massive edge against any competitor. But for me at least my Twitter is a very different social space to my Instagram and there’s very little crossover. So Threads looks like it’ll be text posts with your Instagram friends. Whic…
It also seems like a problem for anonymity. On Twitter, I can create multiple accounts and I can stay anonymous if I like. I don't know about IG, but FB only allows one account. I don't want my info leaking somehow. I also have a very different Twitter space from my FB space. Though my IG is also different from my FB.

Same with the App Store. Apparently the app is going to collect health and wellness data about me. Wonderful.
How can this be legal? I'm pretty sure that in order to legally process health data, an entity must have a plausible reason for doing so, at least in some jurisdictions. What could that reason possibly be for a social media app?
Just think about the rich data they could collect in 2023! Tracking changes in your heart rate and sleep quality on the basis of your app use!

How would you bootstrap the feed?
Let me CHOOSE if I want to see "suggested" or "promoted" content. Have "followers only" and "monetized influencer crap" tabs. At least make it an option.
