I don't think I'm in any of those groups. I own a variety of monitors and can easily tell the difference between 60hz and 120hz. All things being equal, I of course prefer 120hz (or 165hz as some of my gaming monitors support). I also own monitors at resolutions from 1440p to 4k. I want the best of both worlds. There exist 144 Hz 4K 27" monitors, such as the LG 27GP950/27GP95R. They're still LCD panels rather than OLED, but I am confident that OLED panels with these dimensions will arrive fairly soon.

I've been using two 27" 4k 144hz monitors for over a year on my personal machine. I'm doubtful if my work setup would be able to drive them to full capability.

I think there are three groups of people with opinions regarding 120Hz vs 60Hz refresh rate. Group 1 can tell the difference between the two and strongly prefers 120Hz. Group 2 can't tell the difference between the two and prefers the more affordable options. Group 3 has not done a lot of comparisons between the two refresh rates, or has used 120Hz displays that were actually in 60Hz mode, or compared lower resolutio…

I know I'd notice the difference and would strongly prefer 120Hz, but I still stay away from them for now because if I got a 120Hz monitor, I would also need to buy a new MacBook Pro to match the refresh rate. (Also not sure if the M1 Air could even drive 4K 120Hz.)

I strongly prefer matte, to the point of immediately excluding glossy from my initial selection. In my experience matte only has issues when the sun is shining directly onto it, whereas glossy will immediately glare in areas which aren't incredibly light. Got something with black on your screen? I hate glossy monitors, the mirror is so distracting, it catches my eye all the time. Even if the reflection is faint, it is unexpected movement.

> Their main supposed advantage, that they mitigate glare, is just false. It is very true, contrary to what you claim. The glare on my old trusty Dell U2413 matte display is next to non-existent compared to Apple M1 Air that is hooked to it.

maybe I wasn't very clear in my point. I'm not saying matte doesn't attenuate glare. I'm saying that it does some, mainly by diffusing it and spreading it around and I personally can't stand any amount of it. It's binary for me: If I get any amount of glare I tilt my screen away until there's none.

Another issue is the nature of the reflection. In a glossy screen, the reflection often is a mirror effect that, at least for me, is easier to ignore. Reflections in matte shine up the surface's tiny individual indentations and that blocks more of the screen under it.

And what about screen protectors? You can make a glossy screen matte with one, but not the other way around.

Generally apple picks the optimal ppi and they don’t market the ppi value, only that it’s “retina”. They will prefer odd resolutions over suboptimal ppi. For example, the m2 macbook air is 2560 by 1664 at 224 ppi. The maximum ppi you can get on an iphone is 460 ppi, so I assume in their testing they found that even people with perfect vision holding it really close had no use for sharper screens than that.

The "human perception" crap is always marketing. Everything is supposedly at the limit of human perception, until the next generation of technology comes out, and then this time it's for real at the limit of human perception! I think the last 20 years of tech products I've bought were always marketed as at the limits of human perception.

Step aside 8 bit color, 16 bit color displays are here: 65536 colors! Nobody can perceive more than that! Then 32 bit color came along: 1+MILLION colors!! How can it get better than that? Humans can't perceive more! 30FPS gaming as the gold standard for what the eye can behold, then it became 60FPS, now it's 120FPS! The PPI arms race is the same thing.

Yes, with AMD cards, the 8K monitor only works on Windows.

With Intel ARC cards, the 8K monitor works neither on Windows nor on Linux :(

Not sure, but that's definitely a particular thing Synergy does alright. I do find it's a bit meh still between OS' but only in some cases where you might have a full-screen game open on one computer and other non-full-screen content on another.

I personally just use a kvm to switch between computers on my desk with monitors that are dedicated to them because of issues with synergy. But also synergy doesn't work with vpns.

People are happy using DSC for a pixel perfect monitor? I'd never trust it for graphics work.

I wouldn’t say happy, but it’s currently the only choice. Maybe as drivers advance we can have non-DSC links — the hardware should support it per the spec…

How much power does it use when driving the 8K monitor?
