>Likewise many dating profiles say "I want a man who will spoil me." "Looking for a man who is $trait, $trait, and generous."

When I was dating, I honestly thought that such verbiage was a code for signaling they were hookers without getting removed. I automatically discarded those profiles.

I think a lot of times it is. Either that or they want a sugar daddy.

I am much younger than this guy and have dated way fewer people, and I’ve been involved with two people like that. So it’s almost definitely something they’re doing, given n>50. I’m also not convinced I should date forever and never get married, nor that women are all seeking to simply extract and be entertained by me. This could be related (lol)

I was going to make a distinction in my post about age but decided not to, to avoid making it too long. And it caught me. I will say there was a time this wasn't the case. My highschool gf gave a lot. My college gfs actually gave a bit too. Young women are pretty giving in a way. Eventually that goes away. I don't know if it's from being burned, or learned behavior over time, or just genes/hormones.. but it seems to…

It might be because the "good ones", like the young women you dated early on, eventually get snapped up into marriages. Eventually, the only women who are left are the not-so-good ones, along with good ones who got into bad relationships and got burned.

That's a decent point, yes. For a second I wanted to argue that many people I know that did marry early have the same gripes, but it's also possible that people that married early long ago married because it was much more expected back then, meaning they may have even married non ideal women too just to get the process of life going. That would explain why many 50 year old men are just as jaded. They married what today would be a bad woman, but they did it early in 1985 when everyone was getting married at 24.

Yes, I think that's something that's changed a lot over the decades. These days, people are holding out for better partners, instead of rushing into marriage with someone lousy just because they don't want the social stigma of being a "spinster" unmarried by 30.

A very longwinded essay whose obvious conclusion - that values will change in response to circumstances - is entirely missed, presumably to make problematising educated women the tacit point instead. People learn and change: increasing numbers of women in education now will mean more relationships where expectations have changed in the future. This is likely to mean that, actually, some men with lower incomes than th…

Not going to happen, women do not want an unemployed man.

Unemployment is easily made up for by a combination of "bad boy" personality traits and sufficiently wealthy parents.

What I find interesting and I am curious if these conversations can happen anymore. I no longer discuss anything related to gender, relationships, or personal life dynamics with anyone outside of my bubble. I would enjoy the conversation, learning about another's ideas and understanding although despite assurances of maturity and openness conversation ends due to their inflammatory pronouncements. I do not believe id…

If you're in the US, the reason for this above is because certain political groups have adopted a zero-tolerance stance on discussion on many topics, and viciously attack people who try to have conversations about them that aren't affirmations of their positions.

Although most cultures have always had at least some small set of "taboos" for which this was true, I believe that we're in times where that set is especially large, or at least it is for the above groups of people.
