That doesn't give a blank check to do whatever you want without criticism. And if previous actions justify later actions then the US shouldn't have meddled in 2014. Thus "no need" to blame Russia, the US is responsible. In reality, things are much more nuanced than that logic.

This is a run-of-the-river type dam (relatively small elevation drop between upstream and downstream), but one with an enormous reservoir, with a volume (1.8e10 m³ nominal) larger than e.g. Banqiao (4.9e8 m³) or Mosul (1.1e10 m³). No. Russians are trying to stop the counter offensive. This move will free up troops to defend Melitopol. Capturing that city effectively blocks land supply route to Crimea.
Wouldn’t Melitopol be harder to defend though? Looks to me that the huge accumulation lake upstream of the dam should drain in a few days, so a crossing by the Ukrainian forces should be much easier.

There are more than two groups who could have done this. The Wagner Group could have done it independently. Ukrainians or Russians could have done it thinking it advances their goals. Who it benefits, hurts, and who could have done it is messy.

I hear this a lot, but living just a few hour drive from the conflict and sharing a border with Russia, my take is that the west is overthinking this.
This is Russian politics which spilled over to another country. You can see it in e.g. how Prigozhin is positioning himself politically.
They're trying to figure out who will lead Russia in the coming years and this invasion is used to further this goal.
Of course there are other objectives, but this is the main one.
