I remember that fact checks were a thing long before Trump was a prominent political figure. I also don't find it particularly surprising that Trump of all people is the subject of so many fact checks, given that the man is a brazen pathological liar.

Why? If it is an AI generated image, it was generated from a text prompt, by the author of the article. Author had reviewed the image. The image is novel. As long as this is novel content, it should be parsed, I think.

If you really believe that fact checks were "rarely if ever" used before or after Trump's term, I can't help but wonder if your exposure to them is mainly through articles about "biased fact checks" on media like NYT or Fox - it stands to reason that there'd be a lot more of them showcased when Trump was the main source of widely publicized false information.
