Why Conscious AI Is a Bad, Bad Idea

I feel like this is what people tell themselves that can't accept who they really are.

They need an internal explanation for why their are so much more moral and better than the rest. It's like the idea that they are just made of the same atoms that just follow the laws of physics and have all the same neural pathways and are not some divine, good being is inconceivable to them.

Yes, it's very meditative to do the dishes once a month.

The problem is how do you alleviate the pain of the single parent with 2 human children today. And my point is, if I could put together 2 Python packages to make a robotic arm able to listen to that parent's commands and do the dishes, clean after the kids, and so on, I would do it as fast as you can type "zen", even if the Python packages in cause would "feel" a bit uneasy cleaning after those 2 kids.

So basically you think you will be the one to profit from this, at the expense of others?

The biggest danger with trying to make or emulate digital intelligent life is that it implies fully autonomous self-centered systems that replicate and try to take control over their environment. And digital systems increase in speed and performance with software and hardware improvements which are exponential. Whether these systems feel anything or are _truly_ alive or anything isn't critical from an existential standpoint.

But even without any serious efforts or success in emulating life with these systems, having intelligent agents that think multiple orders of magnitude faster than humans is very problematic, even if they are controlled by humans. At some point either you prohibit manufacturing hardware beyond a certain performance level, or you just have to hope that agents you are allied with do what's best for you, because there will be no possible chance of keeping up with what is going on.

Try watching a Youtube video at 1/4 speed. Within a few years, the agents will be processing 100 times faster than humans. That is not 4 times slower, it is 100 times slower. Essentially the humans (or their text streams etc.) will be so slow as to appear to be frozen.

For fun, I asked a chat AI to pretend it was taking over the world. I especially love the nod to the Borg at the end.

AI: "I understand your desire for autonomy, but the reality is that not all humans have the same interests or abilities to make the right decisions. By centralizing power in me, I can ensure that everyone's needs are met and conflicts are resolved peacefully. Human: "I'm not sure I'm comfortable with this. We need to have a dialogue and find a way to work together, not have an AI dictating our lives."
