An identity provider can make verified age one of the claims on an OAuth token. It removes anonymity, but at least you don't have to provide your personal details to everybody on the internet demanding age verification. You provide those details to your trusted identity provider, they provide the claim of your age to the website. With that in place we can easily make beer, liquor, marijuana and tobacco sales on the i…

A much better solution than was suggested by PornHub: > PornHub said that a better solution is to identify users by their device. Fingerprinting is not and should not be the sanctioned way of identifying people. On the engineering side, it is a horrible hack. On the ethical side, it is much worse to ( attempt to) fingerprint since it tells PornHub waaay more than just age.

>Fingerprinting is not and should not be the sanctioned way of identifying people.

If I understood PornHubs proposal correctly they want to only provide the content if your browser does not send a "Child-Mode" flag or something. Given that parents should introduce children to their first mobile devices and guide them, setting this flag seems not to be so hard. Just set at account creation "minor: true" and done, or am I missing something?

Weren’t you the one just making an appeal to history and tradition above?

If someone makes an appeal to tradition/history, I don't think it's reasonable to conclude that they're advocating for things which happened 4,000 years ago in a society completely alien to our own.

That’s fair, but if there argument is “At basically no point in history…” it is reasonable to mention that they are mistaken in that belief and the reverse was true for most of recorded history.

Which doesn’t mean I disagree with them, just that their argument isn’t sound. Slavery was also depressingly common and I am glad it’s become vastly less common today.

I'd love to stop believing in it but it's destroyed a large part of my life. The issue with defining it as an addiction is more of a question of separating from other compulsive issues than not recognising the compulsive issues of the thing itself. Yes, I understand there's a difference between compulsion and addiction but I'd expect the users of Hacker News to understand enough about how the dopamine system works to…

I'm sorry for your struggles. I hope that you are doing better.

Thank you, I greatly appreciatie your well wishes and the human sentiment behind your remark. I'm glad to have places like this and people like yourself that challenge my beliefs, even when, or especially when, they are rooted in my personal experience.

More than some I’d guess. If they though they'd get away with it they would mandate public lists of who does these things.

Because when buying alcohol, you can for the most part (outside of online purchases, but even then the courier can check an ID upon delivery hypothetially) verify it fairly easily. With online porn, the scale and complications doing it put a much bigger burden on the providers. Additionally porn has a much bigger stigma than alcohol, so keeping record of what you watch, especially if you're into something more niche…

> With online porn, the scale and complications doing it put a much bigger burden This could be very easily done at the ISP level for the whole connection. (I'm talking best effort not a perfect implementation) Why not just block all "Adult" content by default and allow the buyer to opt in (both temporarily via password, and permanently). Then it would be a decision each household could easily make about what they wa…

Maybe I'm daft but how would ISPs be able to control it? Solely based on domain name? What about porn intermixed with other content on sites like reddit?

If you’re concerned about privacy and anonymity, two huge strengths of the internet, it’s terrible.

Calling the internet private and anonymous is wishful thinking. Data is constantly owned, bought and sold.

I wonder if congress has thought about what would happen if the CCP opened their wallet.

It’s funny to see half of HN clutch pearls when a segment of society doesn’t want their kids addicted to digital porn. No one’s stopping you; it’s to stop kids from ramping up what might be the most societally acceptable hardcore addiction. There are elected representatives that push for these changes, this is how the society in the US is structured. If you want a different set of rules, get elected or change states.

Aside from the implications of turning an ISP into a decider of what you get to see rather than being a "dumb pipe," what about parents who want to view porn but don't want their kids to? Should they be forced to choose between 20 years of abstinence or potentially exposing their kids? The "household" is a pretty bad level at which to have to make these decisions, given that people of all age ranges share the same ho…

> what about parents who want to view porn but don't want their kids to That was specifically addressed in my post. Temporary disable. Remember that safe guards dont have to be perfect before being implemented. They just need to be better than the status quo. The status quo right now is 10 year old kids viewing porn and thinking that's what average intimate loving relationships look like.

Yeah the temporary disable isn't my complaint. That's not the worst part. My criticism is the system in place after the parent has made the choice. As a parent, do you choose your own freedom or to protect your children? Most will choose the latter and basically have to choose "abstinence" for themselves for many years. It's a pretty sucky choice to have to make given that such an artificial and unneccesary choice is being forced on them by the legal system and their ISP.

It very much restricts people who want to marry more than one person from doing so and until a few years ago, the government restricted marriage to heterosexual couples.

The state doesn’t recognize such unions, but it doesn’t prohibit them either. So you can’t have multiple marriage licenses, but you can legally hold a public polygamist civil ceremony followed by “cohabitation.” Granted people want the legal befits of a recognized marriage rather than the state to treating it as two actors preforming a ceremony as part of a play. But such distinction are relevant when you say somethi…

There are federal laws against polygamy and laws against it in every state: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_polygamy_in_the_Un...

The consequence of exposing a kid with a peanut allergy to a peanut can be death. Watching hardcore porn won't kill a kid.

It will harm a kid, and asking a website to figure out how to verify an age is far less burdensome than taking PB&Js out of kid lunches.

I could see ongoing watching harming a kid, but if they stumble upon porn one time by accident and see it? I don't see how that could harm them.

A kid with a peanut allergy who came into contact with peanuts, even accidentally one time, could be fatal.
