I have no desire for “society” to make rules that govern my kids. Especially seeing that between gerrymandering, the electoral college and the fact that each state no matter what the size has two senators means that people who would love to impose their religious beliefs on others have an outsized influence on laws that are passed.

You may not have any such desire but imagine if you died and your kid was adopted by an abusive person you _would_ want the state to intervene. I'm as unsatisfied as you are about the current political situation in the United States, but the solution isn't to just demand the government withdraw. It is to actually engage _more_ politically and with an understanding of what the true responsibilities of the state are. T…

Meta comment: Your attempted use of markdown italics multiple times in your comment made it a little unreadable (I made this mistake for a long time myself). So pro-tip: On HN, italics are the * * rather than markdown's _ _

> "Targeting trans people"

To be clear, this is what (many) progressives call policies like "making it illegal to mutilate the genitals of children," or "keeping men out of women's prisons."

Some parts of the right-wing social agenda (abortion restrictions, for example) are broadly unpopular. But protecting people from the gender cult is a winning issue politically.

I know someone who struggled with porn addiction. The person you replied to admitted to struggling with it. It's real, as an empirically observable fact.

A struggling person finding relief in porn doesn't mean that porn is addictive.

I didn’t suggest if it is happening in Utah it isn’t for religious reasons, but I don’t think criticism of porn is strictly a religious issue.

"It seems that POPU (Problematic Online Porn Usage) is not only one subtype of hypersexual disorder, but currently the most prevalent since it also frequently involves masturbation. Although this is difficult to accurately determine given the anonymity and accessibility factors that make pornography use today so pervasive, we can at least confirm that the patron of consumption for pornography has changed for roughly…

Thanks for sharing this reference. > researchers are unsure that it is its own addiction Yes. Indeed, this is the reason experts object to the term “porn addiction”. Some “addicts” might be consuming a lot of porn, but that doesn't mean that porn is addictive --- just like how alcoholics use bottles a lot, but bottles are not addictive.

Let's hope that public discourse will continue and draw attention to the need for further research.

I've been addicted to pornography myself and spoken with many men who say the same, as well as many women who have had their relationships and mental health destroyed by being partnered with people like myself.

The current state of research and recognition is not always reflective of reality. I'd hope that anyone familiar with the history of science could accept that.

Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder is not an addiction. The Wikipedia article that you cited begins with the following sentence: “Pornography addiction is the popular but unscientific[5] application of an addiction model to the use of pornography.” [5] Science Stopped Believing in Porn Addiction. You Should, Too. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/women-who-stray/2018...

I'd love to stop believing in it but it's destroyed a large part of my life. The issue with defining it as an addiction is more of a question of separating from other compulsive issues than not recognising the compulsive issues of the thing itself. Yes, I understand there's a difference between compulsion and addiction but I'd expect the users of Hacker News to understand enough about how the dopamine system works to…

I'm sorry for your struggles. I hope that you are doing better.

tldr: if your kid keeps breaking the rules, ramping up enforcement is not going to change that for the same reasons that punitive punishment in the judicial system is not effective. Your kid has to understand why the rules are if they're ever going to function well within them, and that also requires a level of parental compassion and understanding that often isn't present. > If your son keeps braking the rules you'v…

I support the education driven approach, but I still think there is room for content filtering. In the next few years, I hope turning on suite of content rules across platforms will mitigate explicit material from automatically being included in normal content feeds and prevent casual searches for porn. I have no expectations that blocking material from enterprising children will be effective and consider it a more o…

Yeah, I think there's absolutely value in controlling the pressures and expectations that kids are under--e.g., filtering sexually suggestive stuff out of social media feeds, etc. (Also for violence, too. I know seeing stuff like combat footage out of Ukraine is doing weird things to my psyche, I can't imagine what it'd be doing to a still-developing-brain.)

I figure the best strategy (again, as a non-parent) is kind of defense-in-depth: implement some general screening to keep the ambient level of attention-bombardment somewhere sane, help your kids develop sane habits around their tech use and getting what they want out of it, and educate the kids on why those controls are in place for the stuff that leaks through.

Again, my main concern is how much people crutch off of "just block everything," along with the knock-on effects that can lead to. E.g., there's a growing pile of people in the US who class any form of LGBT media as "pornography", which is patently ridiculous, but if that's the criteria used by your chosen filter mechanism or if that's the criteria people try to apply to society....

It’s perfectly possible to limit the state to only specific areas, we don’t let it set up arranged marriages for example. As to that specific example, I trust my own judgment for who my kids would be reared by more than I trust a bureaucrat with the same role.

It very much restricts people who want to marry more than one person from doing so and until a few years ago, the government restricted marriage to heterosexual couples.

About a month ago I had my groceries delivered from Wholefoods and the deliver driver carded me for some non-alcoholic beer I had purchased. I tried explaining to him that he didn't have to do that, but he wouldn't unload my groceries until I let him scan my ID.

I had this a lot during the pandemic lockdown, for groceries and takeout… things that weren’t even liquid or food were mislabeled in some database as alcohol, requiring stressful social interaction when the whole point was no contact dropoff. Crazy how people aren’t allowed to use common sense but have to follow an apps instructions.

It's really not that crazy. "allowed to use common sense" is a loophole you could drive a semi truck through.
