> Why aren't parents doing basic things like setting up content filters? Not a comment on the policy; I'm a parent and AFAICT none of my cohorts in town know how to do this.

My son runs a vpn to get around my dns enforced fillers. I’ve tried to block vpns but he still finds a way.

You don't block the VPN, you take away his admin access.

Is there a mechanism for empowering a polity to protect minors from certain things the polity deems they're not ready for that doesn't rely on arbitrary rules?

How about: If you don't want your kids to see it, that's on you. Either accept that you are a shitty parent who can't raise children to your satisfaction, or get better at parenting. Don't force consequences on me just because you are incompetent.

Are you a parent?

> It's addictive for one. Citation needed. Porn addiction doesn't exist [0]. [0] https://www.psychologytoday.com/intl/basics/porn-addiction

"It seems that POPU (Problematic Online Porn Usage) is not only one subtype of hypersexual disorder, but currently the most prevalent since it also frequently involves masturbation. Although this is difficult to accurately determine given the anonymity and accessibility factors that make pornography use today so pervasive, we can at least confirm that the patron of consumption for pornography has changed for roughly…

> researchers are unsure that it is its own addiction

Yes. Indeed, this is the reason experts object to the term “porn addiction”. Some “addicts” might be consuming a lot of porn, but that doesn't mean that porn is addictive --- just like how alcoholics use bottles a lot, but bottles are not addictive.

Your article claims that rape levels have deceased with the expansion of internet pornography but that's statistically untrue, as they've almost doubled: https://www.statista.com/statistics/191137/reported-forcible...

Yeah, just like how US spending on science, space, and tech increased suicides by hanging, strangulation, and suffocation [0]. The article I cited talks about natural experiments, which examine what happens before and after porn was legalized. [0] Spurious Correlations. https://www.tylervigen.com/spurious-correlations

I understand that correlation is not causation but the claims in the article you linked me to rely on correlative factors that are demonstrably false.

Multiple issues with this. It starts off with arbitrary definitions of what pornography is ( https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/static/SB0287.html ): "nipple of the female breast" You can suck on it when you are a baby, but god forbid you ever take a look at it again before you are married. What's wrong with these people? Even public nudity laws differ from city to city (e.g. in California), so clearly, people aren't al…

There’s such a strange dichotomy in these conversations. 1. Porn shouldn’t be available to kids and it’s on the vendors legally to ensure that. 2. Porn should be unrestricted, it’s up to parents to do something about it. What I can’t understand is if the people in camp 2 are so unashamed of the porn advocacy then why is age verification such a big deal? If it’s not a big deal then verifying your age shouldn’t phase y…

2. I don't want to live in a permission society where I have to submit to inspection to do anything.

If it’s not a big deal then verifying your age shouldn’t phase you anymore than verifying your age to buy alcohol.

I don't like that either and some years ago I stopped providing my ID on request. Corporate vendors (eg supermarkets) still insist on asking my birthdate. I'm in my 50s.

Paternalistic attitudes infantilize society and that's a lot more shameful than most porn could ever be. Absent specific reasons to believe abuse or exploitation is taking place, lawmakers need to stay out of other people's business.

Ah yes, who doesn't want to return to the good old days of the code of Hammurabi.

Weren’t you the one just making an appeal to history and tradition above?

An identity provider can make verified age one of the claims on an OAuth token. It removes anonymity, but at least you don't have to provide your personal details to everybody on the internet demanding age verification. You provide those details to your trusted identity provider, they provide the claim of your age to the website. With that in place we can easily make beer, liquor, marijuana and tobacco sales on the i…

Checkbox for "I don't want to view or reply to comments by under 18s" for websites would be a plus. Think web will get somewhat better when adults stop getting into arguments with kids without knowing it. Wouldn't mind even more granularity, i.e. I don't want to interact with with anyone +/-10 my age.

Queue the full Tinderization of online interaction, I only want to see coments from X race, Y age, Z height with following list of orientations and identitites.

The concept of “minors” involves arbitrary rules, so, no.

That isn’t, however, an argument against restraint in such arbitrariness, but the opposite.

This doesn't directly add to or take from your point, because obviously laws have a purpose - that assassin was motivated by an extreme religious affiliation to the lawmakers. There is irony here.

I'm not seeing the irony, unless you believe that opposition to pornography being available to kids must necessarily have a religious motive. I oppose it, and I am an atheist.

It doesn't have to for anyone, but does in this instance as the lawmakers in question are motivated by their affiliation with a religion.

We don't apply this principle to something like peanut allergies. "If your kid touches a peanut, that's on you as a parent"? No, people recognized that peanuts are harmful enough to a certain segment of the population that it's worth making changes, even changes that might inconvenience others. Besides, I'm not sure why you think that parents are able to be 100% in control of things that their children see/eat/etc. S…

The consequence of exposing a kid with a peanut allergy to a peanut can be death. Watching hardcore porn won't kill a kid.

Also, when you know something contains peanuts, you just stick a label "CONTAINS PEANUTS" on the packaging. You don't get the grocery store to ask everyone for a peanut allergy certificate before selling them a jar of PB, and also keep a log of who bought PB from them.

And we already have something similar for porn sites, in the form of the "Are you over 18?" landing page banners.
