It's addictive for one. There are increasing number of support groups for men who are struggling with pornography use and for their spouses in dealing with having a dependant partner. It creates a space for people to explore and normalise their distressing sexual interests without questioning the root causes. Producers will often intentionally seek out vulnerable young women and groom them with promises of fame and r…

It would fall under Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder[0] in ICD-10. [1]

Pornography Addiction as a unique pathology is still not recognised but the issue is still young. We can see that it's an issue in that more than half of US divorce cases mention compulsive pornography usage. [2]

You can read more about Pornography Addiction and what I mean by that over at Wikipedia. [3]

You can see support groups for self-identifying addicts in places like Reddit. [4][5]

Furthermore, mutual support groups for partners of addicts. [6]

How about: If you don't want your kids to see it, that's on you. Either accept that you are a shitty parent who can't raise children to your satisfaction, or get better at parenting. Don't force consequences on me just because you are incompetent.

What do you think of helicopter parenting? What about the "free range" movement? What's the proper balance of freedom and privacy for kids?

I was a free range kid (we just called it "being a kid" though). I feel bad for the kids of helicopter parents - the parent is hiding them from the world and blocking them from learning about the world as it exists and from discovering how they can/will interact with it. Then one day they cross a threshold of "number of days alive" and are expected to know how to live in the world they haven't ever been exposed to. Sounds like a derange science experiment carried out by insane control freaks more than parenting.

Multiple issues with this. It starts off with arbitrary definitions of what pornography is ( https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/static/SB0287.html ): "nipple of the female breast" You can suck on it when you are a baby, but god forbid you ever take a look at it again before you are married. What's wrong with these people? Even public nudity laws differ from city to city (e.g. in California), so clearly, people aren't al…

Canada's similar bill just passed senate reading on the 18th and needs to go to the house. It just says "sexually explicit material" and I'm having trouble finding an exact definition because its changed a bunch and I can't find the current definition. https://www.parl.ca/legisinfo/en/bill/44-1/s-210 UK https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3137 https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-65388255 I'm not sure where else these b…

Extremely inexpensive is infinitely expensive when you're a 13 year old with 2 dollars to your name.

It does not need to be literally the same thing to be a useful point of comparison, which is the nitpick argument bumby was making.

I was replying to your own position of it being extremely inexpensive. I understand that comparisons and metaphors are never 1 to 1. If you have another point to make then I'll gladly hear it out.

If you include lynchings (and I am), very recently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_violence_against_LG...

Mob violence and hate crimes =/= state sanctioned violence. Readers should note that all of the cited examples here are considered criminal and illegal in the United States.

They literally asked "with or without trial"

Presumably they are using some form of IP address geolocation. If that's as inaccurate in the USA as it is in Australia, they're going to have problems - a lot of the time it puts me in the wrong State.

"They're going to have a problem" — for whom is that a problem? Porhub made the best reasonable effort. The ISPs supplied inaccurate data and are in the jurisdiction, but aren't required to supply anything at all AFAICT. Who has a problem?

Given the known problems with IP geo-location, I don't think this would count as "the best reasonable effort." Unless you interpret "reasonable" to mean "half-ass."

The consequence of exposing a kid with a peanut allergy to a peanut can be death. Watching hardcore porn won't kill a kid.

It will harm a kid, and asking a website to figure out how to verify an age is far less burdensome than taking PB&Js out of kid lunches.

> What's wrong with these people? It's Utah. Utah, for all the ways that actually matter, is effectively a theocracy operated by an ultra-conservative religious minority. Utah is about as similar to the rest of the United States as the rest of the United States is similar to the Middle East.

Ehh it's definitely not just the ultra religious conservatives who are raising issues with pornography. I see a lot more "health bro influencer"/Andrew Tate types warn against watching porn because they think it makes people weak minded, which I would agree with when it turns into an addiction and actually impacts your ability to form real life relationships.

Andrew Tate is a pornographer.

My beard is gray but the government requires me to show a valid state ID when buying booze, cigs and porno mags at the gas station. If that's not a violation of the Constitution, why should carding people on porno websites be different?

I never said there was a constitutional issue (I don't think that there is). The difference between showing ID to a clerk and this sort of thing is recordkeeping. A clerk is only checking the DOB on the ID, not keeping a record of your identity[1]. Online age checks keep records. If there were some way of doing an age check without having your identity attached to it or having to expose yourself to some commercial th…

As a foreigner, it's kind of strange that violent movies (and political propaganda disguised as violent movies) are protected speech and pornography is not.

Just the fact that pornography is being taken seriously as something that's dangerous for minors is a good thing really.

Is it? Is this a States thing? That in the United States that nudity and pornography is "dangerous", yet in other cultures throughout Europe, it's not taken as seriously, nor does it have this overall "dangerous" tag to it (generally speaking that is. Prudish people trying to impose their will on others can be a world-wide phenomenon). And does this put a curb on explicit R rated movies that has nudity and acts of se…

France and Germany have similar laws, and the UK is about to pass one.

It would be nice if this were true, but it's not.
